Father gave us a name
Father gave us a name
When we were nameless he took our shame
Father gave us a name
Father gave us a voice
Father gave us a voice
When we forgot we had a choice
Father gave us a voice
chorus
Thank you, thank you, Father
Thank you, thank you, Father
We will remember you
We will remember you
We will remember you
We will remember you
Father gave us the truth
Father gave us the truth
When all they were selling were lies
Father gave us the truth
chorus
I like it, as usual. What is the background on the "gave us a name" line?
Hi John,
What is the background on the "gave us a name" line?
Raising awareness to the world community about apartheid in S.Africa.
Thanks for the listen and post :D
James
Hey James
I thought I commented on this a week ago - I know the wife an I both listened to the recording , ( might be my old age catching up on me :) )
When I saw the it was about Nelson Mandela or a tribute to him .
I was expecting a tribal sort of thing an was surprised to read the lyrics an the MP 3 wow ..
Your recording blew the wife an I away - That is awesome man !!
Loved the singing and the playing was delightful !
Awesome job James !
Trev... :D :D :note2: :note2: :note1: :note2: :note2: :note1:
Here is to you as good as you are
And here is to me as bad as I am
As good as you are and as bad as I am
I'm as good as you are as bad as I am
Hi James,
I like the elegance of its simplicity and can certainly imagine an African chorus harmonizing in the background there, well done :D
Paul
Hi Trev and Paul,
Thanks so much for the listens and posts :D
James
Another good one, James. Although I have to say that, like Trev, I was a little surprised by the MP3 - I also expected it to have a more African feel. I'd love to hear more voices on this, especially on the chorus. The clue is in the lyrics:
Father gave US a name
Father gave US a voice
WE will remember you
Father gave US the truth
As always, this is only MY opinion, but I definitely feel that such a powerful lyric would be even more compelling sung by a choir!
Still a lovely tribute, though....
:D :D :D

Yes, this should definitely be re-recorded. I just don't like to put a lot of effort into the first musical version in case there are changes to make from the feedback that might me starting from scratch.
I am hearing this played on a mbira. That's what I was trying to emulate with the guitar.
Thanks for the listen and post. :D
James
Ah, I see - treat this as a rough first draft/demo, then?
Hmm....mbira's a good choice of instrument. Thinking about making your own?

Yes, rough draft demo :D

I'd love to, but I don't have the skills or materials....and if I ever made one, I don't have the skills to play one.
I'll stick with the virtual ones; which I have but haven't had the time to play around with

The guitar version is good. The mbira version is haunting.
