I thought about scrapping this a couple of times - it just didn't seem to fit the way I felt about Buddy. He wasn't my first hero - that honour belongs to the Beatles, but they've acknowledged so many times the debt they owe to Buddy as an influence, and I've been influenced so much in turn by the Beatles, and grown to love Buddy's music so much over the years......

And then I thought, well, alright, if I'm on the wrong track with this, my good friends in the SSG will surely let me know - and come up with some suggestions for improvements...so hey, why not? I don't think it does his memory justice, but I really wanted to pay tribute to the man....and this is the best I can do for now. There's a few BH song titles in there - should we have a prize (or a bonus point, anyway?) for the person who spots the most?

Song For Buddy Holly.

The brown-eyed handsome man lived for the music and the band,
Everyday he'd pick up that guitar and play,
His heart beat a little faster when he plugged in the Stratocaster,
He hoped to live forever and not fade away.

Oh, boy, could he play guitar, he was always gonna be a star,
He burned so brightly, but for far too short a time,
he wrote words of love so deep, he could rave on in his sleep,
He had it all, from the rhythm to the rhymes.

"Love me," he'd say, to Maria Elena everyday,
"Maybe, baby, I'm a-gonna love you too,
It's raining in my heart, every day that we're apart,
Send me some lovin', I'm a-gonna love you too."

It's so easy with hindsight, to say he shouldn't have taken that flight,
But it's too late now, it's over and done,
"Think it over," said Maria, "It's not the end of your career,
If you quit the tour, and come home."

"Love me," he'd say, to Maria Elena everyday,
"Maybe, baby, I'm a-gonna love you too,
It's raining in my heart, every day that we're apart,
Send me some lovin', I'm a-gonna love you too."

But he chose to take that plane, he was never seen again,
And JP and Ritchie kept him company,
Chantilly Lace and La Bamba still play, popular to this day,
And Peggy Sue got married yesterday...

"Love me," he'd say, to Maria Elena everyday,
"Maybe, baby, I'm a-gonna love you too,
It's raining in my heart, every day that we're apart,
Send me some lovin', I'm a-gonna love you too."

RIP Buddy - you were one of the early giants of rock'n'roll, and your music has stood the test of time - and then some. Still as fresh and exciting and as fun and as funky as it was way back in the 50's.....the music will NEVER die.

Vic,

Looks like the pieces are all there...What is kind of song do you hear?

Suggestions:
#1Title: The Gonna Love is Gone and Loved

#2He hoped to live forever and not fade away.
Maybe something about his music living on ...or more about his passion for music

#3
Oh, boy, could he play guitar, he was always gonna be a star,
This confuses the time frame a bit.... as this line is pre-star and the next line is post-star [or postmortem ]
Maybe ...Oh, boy, could he play guitar, he was a star a rock n' roll star,

#4
he wrote words of love so deep, he could rave on in his sleep,
This idea might need clarification

#5
It's so easy with hindsight, to say he shouldn't have taken that flight,
But it's too late now, it's over and done,
These two ideas seem disconnected..not that either is bad, but they don't seem to belong in the same verseor need a clearer connection
"Think it over," said Maria, "It's not the end of your career,
If you quit the tour, and come home."

#6
But he chose to take that plane, he was never seen again,
I'm not sure this adds anything to the song as the listener already knows this

And Peggy Sue got married yesterday...

Take what fits and discard the rest. :D

Hi Vic

The last half of this:
It's so easy with hindsight, to say he shouldn't have taken that flight,
But it's too late now, it's over and done,
"Think it over," said Maria, "It's not the end of your career,
If you quit the tour, and come home."

is gold. I think that you need to keep with the narrative you've set through the song and lose the "all seeing narrator" of the first half here. Paint in some more details:

Snow was falling that night turning everything white,
Tired and cold and another show over and done,
"Think it over," said Maria, "It's not the end of your career,
If you quit the tour, and come home."

Or something like that.

Keep working on it, Vic. You're getting there!

Peace

Love the story that you told with that one Vic.

It's funny how one artist or group can inspire so much creativity in future generations. I'm really not a fan of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, or Big Bopper, but respect what he and the others brought to the table.

Nice!

In Space, no one can hear me sing!

Great song there Vic,

As the other's say keep working on it. I would love to hear it if you record it. This is only a suggestion but can you use for this song, one of those classic early chord progressions Buddy used . ie using only A, D & E and maybe the odd Am or Em thrown in too.

Keep it up Vic.

Don't scrap it!! Finish it mate!

All the best,

Chris

The guitar is all right John but you'll never make a living out of it! (John Lennon's Aunt Mimi)

Nice lyrics Vic. Are you planning on putting it to music? I hope so.

How would "brown-eyed rocker" instead of "brown-eyed handsome man" sound?
I dunno . . . that "brown-eyed handsome man" just seems . . . wrong.

Anyway, you going to do this in a slow mournful way? I'd like to hear it that way.

Got a rough idea of the music, but I'm STILL working on last week's MP3....

Although "Brown-Eyed Handsome Man" is probably best known as a Chuck Berry song, Buddy did a cover version of it that was a top 5 hit over here in 1963....I was trying to sneak in as many of Buddy's song titles as I could!

Slow and mournful? Hmmm....was thinking a little faster than that to start with, then slowing it down for the last verse - then the chorus done a la BH, uptempo jangly rock. But nothing's set in stone yet.....and if I ever get this *%£$*% riff right for last week's song, I might even get around to doing this one!

:D :D :D

well I finished (or half-finished, anyway) last week's MP3 - now I might get a chance to record this song tomorrow. If I can remember how the chords go, I never wrote them down. Too busy thinking about week 13. AAAAARGH! Sloppy work.....

Thanks for the feedback, as always.....I'm going to go ahead (IF I get some spare time) and record this as originally written, with only a few slight revisions to the lyrics. Reason being, every change that's been suggested would mean losing some of the song titles I tried so hard to weave into the lyric....

Ah well, let's see how it comes out....
