Hi folks
I thought I'd squeeze this one in before I left for the cold grey shores of the United Kingdom for a couple of weeks....
I'm really a novice so can you please explain to me what the I, IV, V, I means? Honestly I don't know. Say D, E, A, E and yup, got that, but Roman numerals - nope, sorry.... :oops:
I'm not sure what category you would put this song in - I've played it to myself with a Country twang, then slowed it down to a Blues - but not sure - anyway, doesn't matter. It's not really the sort of music/song I would write but it's good practice. I find inspiration in strumming the chords and thinking of a few words that seem to go nicely with the transitions - that's how this one worked for me. And Ken - I've managed to get a dog in this one... :wink:
I may be able to get a soundfile online Monday, but it's going to be a busy day.....
Sing along now everybody.... :note2:
Good Times
(A)Sitting here a wonderin'
(D)My brain is kinda stumblin'
(E)think of something special'
we can both do today(A)(A7ext)
no money in my pocket
want to work but had to stop it
and the social* comes too late
but hey that's always the way
(D)Mary had to leave this (Dsus4)town she felt (A)she was going to drown
(E)there's nothing for me to do, (A)I even thought of going too.(A7ext)
(D)Mary's coming back (Dsus4)today, it seems (A) years she's been away
(E) But I know that she'll never stay, but I'm (Dsus2)glad the time I have with (A)you.
I'm gonna pick her flowers
gonna slave for forty hours
she won't recognised the house
when she comes back today
I always try to please her
there's no food inside the freezer
and the cuboards bare, but clean
but hey that's always the way
(D)Mary had to leave this (Dsus4)town she felt (A)she was going to drown
(E)there's nothing for me to do, (A)I even thought of going too.(A7ext)

(E) But I know that she'll never stay, but I'm (Dsus2)glad the time I have with (A)you.
We walked along the river
her words they made me shiver
I turned to her and softly said
That's what you want us to do?
She said she'd got a better job
a house, a garden and a dog
but something there is missin'
and that something is you...
(D)We're both gonna leave this town and I'm (A)not going to miss the sound
of (E)silence, each day the same, the (A)echo when I call her name (A7ext)
I (D)think I gonna shed some tears on (A)good times throughout the years but
(E)good times are gonna come (D)around once again.(A)...
*social = UK equivalent to unemployment/welfare check
I've remembered the tune again now.... :roll:

OK quick crash course in Roman Numerals.......
I = 1
V = 5
X = 10
L = 50
C = 100
D = 500
M = 1000
All other numbers are made up of combinations of these numbers....
I = 1, II = 2, III = 3. The modern convention is to have no more than three consecutive letters the same, so IV = 4 - in this case, putting a smaller number - I - before a larger number - V - means subtract the smaller from the larger; putting a small number AFTER a larger number, add them together, so VI = 6....and so on. Just open the wikipedia home page and type in "Roman Numerals" for more.....
In musical terminology, roman numerals are used to denote a note's (or chord's) position in a scale....
so I would be the root, IV the fourth, V the fifth and so on. Quick look at the scale of C - C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C. The root or I would be C, the fourth would be F, the fifth would be G....so a I - IV - V progression in C would be C F and G.
OK - to the song!
First things first - it's not the shores of the UK that are cold and grey, it's those omnipresent bloody rainclouds! I have heard a whisper that the 2012 Olympics are going to be cancelled, and the money that was going to be spent on them will be spent on something more useful. A roof. For the whole country.
OK - to the song!
Neatly put together, great story, like the rhyming scheme...what else is there to say!
You might want to put a little footnote in to explain "and the social comes too late" - easy for a Brit to understand, the American equivalent would be (I think?) "Welfare Check" but I'm not sure about Europe, Australia, etc.....
Apart from that, looking forward to the soundfile. First impressions reading along, it's a little Dylanesque - the OTHER Dylan, that is, ermmm Bob I think his name is....first impressions strumming along, I got a more Stones-y feel, like "Spider And The Fly," but a bit more uptempo.
Good luck with the trip to England - from your accent, I'm guessing you're not from my little corner of the country - but hey, if you're anywhere "ooop Norf" - near Liverpool or Manchester - let me know!
:D :D :D

"Sometimes the beauty of music can help us all find strength to deal with all the curves life can throw us." (D. Hodge.)
Hi Vic
Thanks for the crash course - I do actually know the Roman numeral system, :roll: it was just that I didn't know how it actually fitted in with the musical elements - which you have so eloquently explained. : :wink:
It's going to be bloody freezing in the UK when we get there. Then there's the long haul from Luton to Lincolnshire - the good thing about that is a good pint of ale and a plate of steaming sausages and mash...Mmmmmmmmmmmm I'm sure my blood has started to thin since living in warmer, sunnier climes. If it wasn't for work and family (which is just about everything in life) I wouldn't come back.
Oh yes, music of course is another thing in life, but you don't have to travel much to enjoy that!
The song, thanks, yes, I'll put in a footnote about the social - I thought it needed to be in there and couldn't think of anything else more pertinent...
Ahh, yes, my namesake - I'll have a listen to Spider and the Fly - I may change the strumming pattern but it could definitely be Country....
Closest I'll be ooop t'North will be Sheffield, but if I should ever venture further, rest assured I will let you know...
Rock on!

Holy moly!
You've already done the assignment!?
I just had a look at it.
Here's a link that has a chart of the notes in each key signature:
It's at the bottom of the page of this link: Major Scale Reference Chart
This chart doesn't use Roman numerals at the top though.
I use this as a cheat sheet to figure out what Vic is talking about.
Don't tell the teacher . . . and I'll let you use it.
It's the rock that gives the stream its music . . . and the stream that gives the rock its roll.
No rest for the wicked...
After listening to the Rolling Stones, Spider and the Fly, I tried a different strumming pattern and chord change which I like, of course I had to change the words to fit, but still works well:
I give you Part II:

Yea the roman numeral thing throws me too I know how to read them but what they mean i can't think fast enough. I went through band in school it put me through college so i'm used to reading chord charts and music or you telling me the key of the song and I instantly know the chords. However start telling me 1 V VI IV I'm like huh I know what you're telling me but I have to go ok D is 1 E is 2 and so forth until I find the chord.
Anyway like the song good job.
No matter where you go.... There You are! Law of Location
Holy moly!
You've already done the assignment!?
+1
That was dazzlingly quick. :shock:
Some good stuff in there - I especially enjoyed:
"I always try to please her but
there's no food inside the freezer" :)
I hope you eventually get the time to tidy it up and record it.
Cheers,
Chris
