Y8W22 A Clockwork Orange

http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=8940325

While the world is soft
Melting to puddles
In the shadow of a canvas
I do not

Brush the fly off your face
You're out on a limb
You're dreaming again
I do not

Chorus
'Cause I just can't find the time
You can't come in; stay out
No, I just can't find the time
I'm a clockwork orange no doubt

While the world is hard
With its oceans and mountains
They dance in the sunshine
I do not

Where I'm safe and protected
With a spring-hinged cover
The ants think I'm dead
I do not

chorus

bridge
No sorrow, disappointment, damage or debris
Can ever, ever touch me
If faith, love and hope can spread their disease
Then love is the greatest of these

chorus

=============================NOTES FOR INTERPRETATION===============================================
Based on Salvador Dali's “The Persistence of Memory”
My question: Why is the orange clock in the lower left corner not “melted”?
My answer: A Clockwork Orange

I think this song is awesome. Seriously. I have no other words to offer right now, beyond saying I wish I'd written it. Will post again once I've let it sit with me for a while. Props.

Yowsers! I like it... you've got so many lovely layers in here... reminiscent of Magical Mystery Tour album, but definitely not overdone. Great production here James.

Hi Jeremy,

Good to hear from you :D Thanks for the listen and post.
you've got so many lovely layers in here..
I appreciate that feedback b/c part of my thinking is, as I am not a keyboard player, I try to keep things pretty simple which, In my mind, forces the song to stand out more vs. a lot of bells and whistles but not a great song.....but bells and whistles are fun to play with, too. :P

Thanks again. Happy Songkran...soon!.....Happy Good Friday for now

I'm not generally a fan of the "insane ramblings" genre of lyrics (I just can't connect with them at all), but I applaud you for coming up with such a creative and unique starting point for writing a song.

Musically it worked pretty well - I found the rhythm grated with me quite a bit for the first 2 verses, but by the chorus, I had found the groove. The bridge was especially nice.

Ultimately, the lyrics work in song much better than they read on paper. Good job!

Hi Martin,

Thanks for the listen and post :D especially since it isn't your preferred genre.
I'm not generally a fan of the "insane ramblings" genre of lyrics (I just can't connect with them at all), but I applaud you for coming up with such a creative and unique starting point for writing a song.
Here's my attempt to show the connection to the words and context, by showing where the ideas came from, but like you said the painting itself was not fully explained, so there is definitely room for interpretations.

The quotes are from the various links I had posted with the lyrics.

The central idea of this enigmatic piece is the passage of time, where the painter has tried to signify the fundamentals of science and their association with the mundane life through his recurrent theme of the tussle between 'softness' and 'hardness.'

While the world is soft
"Perhaps the distorted (soft) images that are in the shade are representing subconscious images, "

Melting to puddles
In the shadow of a canvas
Another peculiar detail that perhaps is not easy to spot at first glance is the way Dali uses light to communicate ideas of this painting......Note that the ants, the three melted clocks and a fetus-like object all reside in the shade as well.

I do not
"The fourth clock, red-orange in color, is stopped and therefore, not 'melting'"

Brush the fly off your face
"One of the three clocks is lying over a platform on the extreme left side. There is a fly sitting on its dial,"

You're out on a limb
"The second clock is hanging on the extended branch of a dried olive tree,"

You're dreaming again
This creature is shown in deep slumber to indicate that the whole setting is a part of a dream, as happened with Salvador himself.

I do not

Chorus
'Cause I just can't find the time
You can't come in; stay out
No, I just can't find the time
I'm a clockwork orange no doubt
If you see the picture, it is the only clock not melted, but it is also the only on with a cover and the cover is closed....so the singer is the orange clock saying if I stay safe and shut up in my case, I won't get hurt or melt like those other three clocks.....the cliche being "Is it better to have loved and lost or to have never loved at all" The watch is choosing the latter. and the definition of a clockwork orange is a Cockney phrase from East London indicating something bizarre internally, but appearing natural, human, and normal on the surface....so the clock appears normal on the outside but is not inside.....and it just happens to be orange in color or redish-orange

While the world is hard
"and the sun-lit mountain (hard) and water represent consciousness."
With its oceans and mountains
They dance in the sunshine
"Whereas, the mountains and the water are lit by sunlight."
I do not

Where I'm safe and protected
With a spring-hinged cover
"A hunter-case pocket watch is the kind with a spring-hinged circular metal lid or cover, that closes over the watch-dial and crystal," http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pocket_watch
The ants think I'm dead
"not 'melting' but is covered by a colony of ants, another symbolization of decease. "
I do not

chorus

bridge
No sorrow, disappointment, damage or debris
"A hunter-case pocket watch is the kind with a spring-hinged circular metal lid or cover, that closes over the watch-dial and crystal, protecting them from dust, scratches and other damage or debris." HERE I CHANGED "dust" to "sorrow" AND "scratches" to "disappointment" TO SWITCH TO EMOTIONAL HARM RATHER THAN PHYSICAL HARM http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pocket_watch

Can ever, ever touch me

If faith, love and hope can spread their disease
Then love is the greatest of these
"1If I speak in the tongues[a] of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing......... 13And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. " http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Corinthians+13&version=NIV
chorus
