(Note: When I checked on Sunday morning, I didn't see an assignment posted, but we did have a storm warning Saturday night, so I've used that as a topic.)
The radio is making a horrible squawk.
You and I can hardly hear ourselves talk.
The song that was playing has gone off the air.
A computer voice comes to give us a scare.
It says a tornado is swinging our way.
We should get ready. Perhaps we should pray.
The path of the twister is helter-skelter.
We should jump up and take immediate shelter.

Good start :D Nice initiative to create a topic and go for it :wink: Nice job on focusing as well.
I haven't lived in "Tornado" counties, so I'm sure what the procedure is. My assumption was there are storm cellars. Yes, no?....but then your singer's location is an apartment, so closet it is.

Regarding ordering, I was wondering how this might do as an opening verse as it kind of sets up the relationship and "history":
We've been struck by many a blow, you and me.
We've been battered like lovebirds out in a tree.
We've seen our nest flying over the yards,
And our dreams have been felled like houses of cards.
.....but on the other side, the way you have it brings the action in immediately which is also a positive.

I am not sure why this line has a question mark, or it comes across as the singer is a bit insecure of the relationship. Although they have already been through a lot together.
Maybe a statement instead of a question would be more affirming.

Considering the assignment ended up requiring a magic reference, you would only needed to have mentioned finding a pair of sparkly red shoes in the closet to help you get home if the twister carried you away ;)
