For The Children

Are they somebody's daughters
Are they somebody's sons
Or just numbers on a page
Are they somebody's daughters
Are they somebody's sons
The names upon these graves

As we sent our children off to fight
Others die trying to sustain a parched land
And on this African night the saddest of sights
A mother holds her dying sons hand

Are they somebody's daughters
Are they somebody's sons
Or just numbers on a page
Are they somebody's daughters
Are they somebody's sons
The names upon these graves

So why don't we choose to feed them
Or ease some of their endless pain
Where is our human compasion
Is it locked up in profit and gain

They are somebody's daughters
They are somebody's sons
Not just numbers on a page
They are somebody's daughters
They are somebody's sons
The names upon these graves

Well done, Celt. Very Pete Seeger-ish. Simple, direct. I'd love to hear the tune you're considering for this one.

Thanks

As for the tune I think Scratch said it best;
Very Pete Seeger-ish. Simple, direct.

Not that I think my writing should be compared to a talent
such as Mr. Seeger, but I like the simple direct approach.

Just some basic chords in G and some bad harmonica. If I ever
get good enough to play bad harmonica. :?

Another good one here Celt,

being a protest song I like the way you make assertions in the last chorus
They are somebody's daughters
They are somebody's sons as opposed to the questions of the others. On that same theme Id also like to see these lines changed
Where is our human compasion
Is it locked up in profit and gain to something like
Because our human compasion
Is locked up in profit and gain I think protest songs have to be polarised. The chorus lines are tight and well structured. The one thing I do wonder about is the last line
The names upon these graves
I think it would be more powerful if you talked about nameless graves.

Good song here, well done :D .

Superb, Celt.....

gets a big "Thumbs-Up" from me....

I think Pbee has a point though, "nameless graves" is a little harder hitting...

:D :D :D

wow, this is a very nice peice. The part about the mother and the son really touched me. I feel there is thought provocation in each word you chose to use. You used just the right words.

Very well done

Hmmmmm,

I wonder why my response to Pbee didn't post

Anyway it was about how I was working on this song
and how much I liked his suggestions.

Here are the revised lyrics and if you go to my Soundclick
address below you will find an MP3 of this song.

For The Children

Are they somebody's daughters
Are they somebody's sons
Or just numbers on the page
Are they somebody's daughters
Are they somebody's sons
Lying nameless in these graves

As we send our children off to fight
Theirs try to sustain a parched land
The saddest of sights on this African night
A mother holds her dying sons hand

Are they somebody's daughters
Are they somebody's sons
Or just numbers on the page
Are they somebody's daughters
Are they somebody's sons
Lying nameless in these graves

So why don't we choose to feed them
Or ease their endless pain
Where is our human compasion Oh Lord
It is locked up in profit and gain

They are somebody's daughters
They are somebody's sons
Not numbers on a page
They are somebody's daughters
They are somebody's sons
Lying nameless in thier graves

For the children now I pray

Thanks

Excellent job on the re-write, and I just took a listen to the mp3...really sounds like a 60's protest song!!!!

Way to go, Celt. Liked the revised a lot better, especially the last line "For the children now I pray"

Keep it up!

There's a thin fine line between hate and rage.
Now watch the line be crossed and break!

Celt,

Good job! Loved this. My only suggestion would be to have more conviction when you sing the last chorus. I hear it a bit but I think it would benefit from more. Only an idea. Great listen! G. :)
