OK so I'm rushing the Holiday Season a little.
The photograph that inspired this song is one I've
been trying to get my hand on for some time.
My sister holds possession of the family archives
Taken circa 1959 it is of a young boy (a rather handsome lad)
standing in front of a Christmas tree in full cowboy regalia.
(Boots ,Hat, Vest and Twin Six Shooter Cap Guns in his holster)
So this gets me thinking of Cowboys and Christmas of course.
Somewhere in modern mythology the Cowboy becomes the
Long Haul Trucker and I end up writing this song.
Cowboy's Christmas
I've been out here way too long
Time to get myself back to you
I don't care what it takes
I will drive this whole night through
I got 18 wheels and a open road
Got a tree with pretty lights
This cowboy's coming home
For Christmas Night
I bought for you some pretty things
I got the kids some toys
Put that yule log on the fire
And we'll share some Christmas joy
I got a reindeer with shiny nose
Got the presents wrapped up tight
This cowboy's coming home
For Christmas Night
So hold on tight I'm on my way
I got one more thing to do
Gotta find a great big box
So I can give my love to you
I got 18 wheels and a open road
Got a tree with pretty lights
This cowboy's coming home
For Christmas Night
This cowboy's coming home
This cowboy's coming home
This cowboy's coming home
For Christmas Night
John
Yeah, truckers are the new cowboys, only instead of catlle drives it's consumer goods.....
Funny, I used to have a photo of me, cicca 1960, gunbelt, two guns, hat, sheriff's star....dunno where that one went....
And i still miss those old westerns, "Have Gun Will Travel" "Gunsmoke" "Laramie" "Laredo" "Tenderfoot" "Cheyenne" - pity one of the thousand stations we have on cable doesn't show them....
Love the song....you were rushing in more ways than one, you missed the word "been" out of the first line....apart from that, can't pick fault with anything.... I can see this one as a nice slow country song, lots of pedal steel....
Another good one, John!
:D :D :D

AFTERTHOUGHT - Shaun'll be home for Xmas, so double reasons to celebrate....
"Sometimes the beauty of music can help us all find strength to deal with all the curves life can throw us." (D. Hodge.)
Thanks Vic,
I can always trust you to do my proof reading for me.
Actually I edited that line at the last moment and
must have taken the "been" out.
Funny how we live so far apart and have many of the
same memories.
When I read your song this week I was thinking I was
that guy from 1974.
John
No -that was definitely me....who else'd wear a white cheesecloth shirt with thin blue stripes, green bell-bottoms - well actually loon-pants - black shoes and red socks?
If there's amyone else lurking out there who has a similar photo, please don't answer "ME!" .....
:D :D :D

Amazing how we all have those memories, I have the same picture with the exception that I'm sitting on my rocking horse "Lightning" in the photo.
Good stuff, brought back alot of fond memories
Immature? Of course I'm immature Einstein, I'm 50 and in a Rock and ROll band.

Hi John,
I see this is a nice "feel good" country number. One thing you can clarify for me is this: is the "great big box" hes getting going to be used to mail the gifts cos hes not going to home until xmas ? In verse 2 hes already got everybody their presents, so what is the significance of the box ?
I like it, keep up the good writing :D .
cheers
pbee
Thanks
Pbee the significance of the box is that he has so much
love to give that it will take a great big box to hold it all.
Gotta find a great big box
So I can give my love to you
It made sense to me but if I'm wrong let me know
and I'll try to work out something different.
John
Pbee,
Im pretty sure the box represents how much he loves her. He needs a great big box to be able to fit his love for her in it.
I have to agree that this comes off as a country tune. I suppose the mention of a cowboy helps that. haha
Flows well John but yes, its a bit early for Christmas songs in my book. haha

YAAAAAH!
It's snowing outside!!! I'm scraping the windows of my car and it's freezing, bring those christmas tunes out!
Nothing else comes to mind but nicely done. I'd like to hear this!
I'm so constructive... I have to stop writing comments when I get home from night shifts :?

"I wish there was an over the counter test for my loneliness"
Great song. I can totally think of this as a very countryish song (the song in my head reminds me of Helloy Mary Lou (the Ricky Nelson one)).
Awesome.
aka Izabella
Izabella,
That's odd when I started working on the music
I thought " This has a Ricky Nelson feel to it"
Maybe I should go for it and see what happens
Thanks

I had a vision of you stuffing yourself in a cardboard box. My demented mind is sure twisted this am!
This is really good. Unfortunately I don't know who Ricky Nelson is, so, I'm looking forward to hearing this. G. :)
