Happy St. Patrick's Day
I chose to do a song for Kathy partly because the idea I was working on
for Vic wasn't working out. Although I got a nice Rock and Roll chord progression
out of it. This is a total reworking of an older song called Remembrance Stone
The first verse remains some what intact with only minor changes the rest is new.
You're just a small memento
Of a time not long ago
A restaurant by the ocean
The warming campfire glow
She and I together
In a calm and quiet place
You ask me to remember
The nights in her embrace
I found it an interesting challenge to write not only with someone
else's voice in mind but also the change in gender.
I hope it worked
I included an MP3 demo but please "Remember" this was not written
with my voice in mind.
Do You Remember?

Capo 3
Em - C - G - D
Em - C - G - D
Em -----------------C---------
I found a small memento
------G------------------D-----
Of a time so long ago
Em---------------------------C-----
Of a restaurant by the ocean
------------G-----------------D-------
Where a warming fire glowed
Em----------C--------
You and I together
----G-----------------------D---
In another time and place
Em----------------- C------------
And it forced to remember
--------------G--------------------D-------
All those nights in your embrace
D------------G---------D---
Do you remember me
------C----------------G---
Like I remember you
---------C---------------------------G----------
When we were young and so in love
------------D------------------------------
And our troubles seemed so few
D---------G--------------D
Do you remember me
------C-----------------G---
Like I remember then
----C---------------G-----------
Or as a fading photograph
---------D-------------------------------Em
From sometime way back when
I found a box of letters
Wrapped in a golden thread
I didn't have to read them
For I knew just what they said
Of love and life and longing
Pain and death and war
Of wanting and returning
From that foreign far off shore.
Do you remember me
Like I remember you
When we were young and so in love
And the life that we would choose
Do you remember me
Like I remember then
Or as a fading photograph
From sometime way back when
Interlude:
Em - C - G - D
Em - C - G - D
I found a old recording
Of that song you use to sing
And If could hear your voice again
Would it still mean the same thing
About loving and temptation
And how every word rang true
I never thought I'd be the one
To be “Tangled Up in Blueâ€.
Do you remember me
Like I remember you
When we were young and so in love
And our troubles seemed so few
Do you remember me
Like I remember then
Or as a fading photograph
From sometime way back when
Em -----------------C---------
I found a small memento
------G--------------D
Of a time so long ago
Hi John
When the music first started, I thought of Kathy and her twelve-string guitar. Very cool.
But I also like the way this works for you, too. I don't think it's out of your range, actually. Singing it higher is making you phrase it differently and it sounds very good.
Nice take on the assignment! You should still feel free to come up with on for Vic if you want! The more the merrier!
Peace

Yep, I could imagine that on a 12-string Taylor!

Again, I totally agree. I am so envious that you can sing along to G Em C and D - that key's horrendous for me!
Interesting, too, that you've delved into the "spare parts" box for this - I've been finding myself doing that more and more lately. Especially when the dreaded writer's block gremlin pays one of his visits! Seems like songs I wrote years ago always have one or two good lines, or a chorus, but never got fully developed... but you've made an excellent job of this.
:D :D :D

Pulling out the guitar at this very moment to play this! Love it!
Falling in love is like learning to play the guitar; first you learn to follow the rules, then you learn to play with your heart.
This is good John, I look forward to hearing it. And yes I can hear Kathy singing this.
Well done
Paul
Thank You Everybody
The first issue I had in writing this was not having a 12 string. I found playing
through a chorus pedal a nice substitute. Then I had to think "What would Kathy do"
so I pulled out the capo. Once I had a chord progression then I started on the lyrics.
Not much luck at first which sent me to the "spare parts" file. Knowing Kathy as a
very "personal experience" type songwriter I choose something personal to me as a
starting point and tried to get in touch with my feminine side. From the feed back
I guess it worked.
Kathy,
I would love to hear a recording of your take on this one.
Thanks Again
John
aw, beautiful!
oh, john, this is amazing. and as has been said before, fits you very well, too. you had me from the first notes. elevating music. and i heard a little of neil young in your voice. don#t know what to add, it's late and i'm running out of words as my eyelids drop... but my ears rejoice :D
cheers,

Hey John,
I love this chorus. I think I remember "Remembrance Stone", it was very good also. Anyways, I can't find anything I don't like about this, or anything I would recommend changing. - sorry, it's just a really good song.
Hey Scratch
Thanks and good to see you around again.
OK John, You asked for it:

Now that's just weird. I heard the guitar and thought it's John.
Nice work on the harmony. It's especially gorgeous in the choruses. But I'm not sure I'd use it during the entire verse, maybe just in the second half of it. Mostly because I think you want to hold some of it back.
Say...
This could be a great duet. Trade lead vocals for the first two verses and then harmony on the last verse. Harmonies on every chorus!
Peace
Very Well Done Kathy
I think I have to agree with David on the harmonies though
a little less would make them mean a lot more.
Thanks
John
This could be a great duet
Yes.
Nice job Kathy definitely suited to harmonies.
cheers
Paul
I agree on the harmony. I've just started experimenting with it and I feel I'm apt to get carried away.
As A side note, John has agreed to perform this as a duet when I go back to the Berkshires on May 2nd to play at the Monterey General Store. (I think "Back to the Berkshires" is a song just waiting to be born)
So, if your in the area come on by, it should be cool!
