I agree with the person who thought the problem was regional (sorry, I haven't work out how to do the quote thingy yet).
I'm in france, all the ad's are perfectly appropiate and guitar-related here (though all are in english)

I had to laugh at an ad I saw just now (which prompted me to post this message). There is an advert to "learn guitar in 30 minutes" with a picture of a scantily-clad woman holding a guitar UPSIDE-DOWN !!!

The ads don't bother me at all, and they seem to always be music oriented (or semi-musical like the Guitar Hero store, which I have no interest in).

And what the GN administrator said is true.

Many sites that you go to will plant "cookies" on your computer, telling the advertisers just what you have been doing on the 'net. So if you went to a lot of car sites before coming here, don't be surprised to see a car ad at the top of the page.

Personally, I only keep the cookies for the session I am on, and I block most ad cookies in my browser's Options settings. I am conservative in my surfing habits, exercise good common sense, and never-ever answer or even acknowledge spam e-mail.

Furthermore, on my own web sites http://www.nortonmusic.com and http://www.s-cats.com to keep the SPAM-bots from automatically harvesting my e-mail address, I've installed a CAPTCHA device. If you don't know what a CAPTCHA is, it's one of those devices that are supposed to tell the difference between a human and a robot by asking you to enter those squiggly words or alphanumeric characters before clicking the "send" or "submit" button.

Spam is here forever. The only things we can do is (1) ignore it and (2) protect ourselves from it as best as we can to minimize the amount we get.

Spam is extremely irritating. Nothing bothers me more than seeing something coming from a fake @guitarnoise.com address. I've done everything I can think of to make sure we don't spam anyone.

I hope the ads you see on the site are in good taste and don't offend, but I can't be everywhere at once. I don't know what ads are shown to readers in France or Romania. As I've often repeated: the advertising "keeps the lights on" for us. Without the ads this site would not be possible. There's no need for me to keep hammering that home. I want you to enjoy the site and let me know whenever you see something you don't like. The contact page has a way to contact me by email. I'll usually get messages sent by email within 24 hours. Complaints on the forums usually take a little longer to filter through to me.

The ads are fine for me, I usually don't notice them. It just made me laugh when I noticed there was one for a singles dating website.

I use firefox with Adblock plus, dont see any such ads.
This is a problem. I mean, you don't get ads - and it's good, but you don't get ANY ads, even appropriate ones, and don't let GN raise some money from it. It's not that good.

Adblock lets you disable it on a per-site basis, it you want.
There are 3-4 sites that I disable it for, GN being one.

But if a site starts subjecting be to moving ads, or ones that pop up extra windows, or make noise, or use huge amounts of bandwidth (streaming video in an ad...), or otherwise behave in an obnoxious manner, then all ads from that site get blocked.

As I said, GN in one of a very small number that I allow to show me ads.
