vintage Fenders have 7.25" radius' (very curved boards)..modern Fenders have 9.5" radius' and some models even have 12" rads...and very recently Wildw...

He may have removed it becuase five strings are alot of tension. And the springs may not have been stretched enough to allow you to pull up on the bar...
