Damien Rice – O

Just from looking at the packaging you can tell that this is not going to be your average singer/songwriter. Once inside the cloth-covered case, you are greeted by a booklet of interesting artwork which reinforces your feelings that this artist isn’t one who conforms to the norm.

The real prize, however, comes when you push “play.” You are welcomed in with Delicate, a laid-back affair which gradually builds with many layers to accompany Rice’s honest vocals. This aptly-named intimate song opens the door to the album, leaving you with its sublime melody long after the music is finished.

“O” is neither here nor there; just when you think you have the measure of it, along comes a song like I Remember that knocks you off your feet with its sheer intensity. With the previous track (Cold Water) being both subtle and subdued, this can come as a shock.

From beginning to end this record will not let your attention slip, whether with the amazing textures of Volcano, the sheer emotion of Blowers Daughter or the progressive intensity of the aforementioned I Remember. You will not get bored, that is for sure. But should you do so, then the variation on Silent Night, one of the two “hidden” tracks, should keep you occupied.

The arrangements are brilliant, with strings placed perfectly to add to the overall sound. One thing is certain, Damien Rice’s songwriting abilities are never in doubt.
