Neil Schon – Voice

Legendary guitarist Neil Schon (Journey) is back with a new solo album. Here is one man who’s guitar work is always appreciated. He first came to notice on Carlos Santana’s debut album (there are two great guitarists on that album: Santana and Neil Schon).

This is an album of covers where Schon replaces the vocal parts with incredible, tasteful solos. My first reaction at reading the track list was one of disappointment. Some of these songs I have always disliked very much. From Killing Me Softly to Mariah Carey’s Hero, songs I can generally do without.

However, Mr. Schon’s beautiful craft brings a whole new dimension to these songs. Making them even quite beautiful. With only one exception. Or, to be perfectly honest, one song I have not and will not listen to: My Heart Will Go On. My only comment about it is: hasn’t it been done to death already?

I must, however, take the time to make a special comment about Con Te Partiro (a.k.a. Time to Say Goodbye). A song that is beautiful to begin with. I never thought I’d like it without Sarah Brightman’s godly voice, but it comes out extremely well.
