Are Jam Tracks worth the investment?

I have been a "fan" of Peter Vogl's video lessons. O like theway he teaches and I am thinking about geting one of his DVD's..

But I was wondering if it's worth it to get Jam tracks to play over like he does in some of the videos on his site? About $15 per CD can be a bit pricey but I'll admit the tracks sound GREAT!

**EDIT**

Here is the link to his Jam Tracks Cd's

Are there any sites to get some decent free tracks or maybe to purchase similar quality tracks at a cheaper price? I really would like to try jamming with something. I have a drum machine but all I can figure out how to play is the Blues Shuffle with the shuffle drum beat. I would like to expand on that but obviously still keeping it simple until I can smooth it out.

Thanks

Hi Mike,

Olav Torvund has a great range of resources on his site.

There's a list here of books with CDs with backing tracks.

Olav Torvund's site

He's also got a heap of backing tracks that he did himself with midi that are good for practising over. Quick downloads being midi. I'll see if I can spot the link to them.

One of the best ways is to do both tracks - record your own rhythm track then try soloing over it. But I guess for some of us that means two sets of mistakes instead of one. So the 'ready made' ones are handy for someone at my level anyway. I've dowloaded a bunch of Olav's. I haven't seen any of the commercial books/cds around yet though.

Not sure what happened to the spot where you could get all the backing tracks in one hit, but I think that some of them are probably included in some of the lessons listed here, so it's probably worth doing them like that anyway.

Blues guitar lessons

Good luck.

Cheers, Chris

What's wrong with playing along with CD's you've already got?

Thanks Chris..I love his site and have been using it with my Blues Shuffle trying to pick up a few tips...I never thought of seeing if he had any backing tracks...

However I am not sure if you listened to some of the one's on Peter Vogl's site (he uses them in some of his videos...) but they sound great...

Thanks for the site Chris!

First I want to eliminate all the guitars from the tracks and have just me playing. Plus I want something generic so I can just "noodle" as Chris like to say! Plus I don't have any Jam Track Cd's...I just used the one's on Peter Vogl's site as an example

IMO Jam tracks that you have to purchase are NOT worth it. There are waaaay to many sites on the internet where you can download them for free, i.e. guitarbt.com guitars101.com just to name 2.

I agree. Theyr'e not a ripoff, but since you can record your own or get software to write them in or download them it's a waste of money to go and buy them. A real band sounds better than a synthesized track done on your computer, but not that much better.

I've come across this sort of decision a time or two on the internet. There is somebody out there doing something you like and you can either spend a bit to get something they've put their time and effort in or you can find their work or similar work for free. Free being a bit of a euphemism for something you ultimately don't know the origin of. You said yourself that you were a fan of this fellow's work. Putting a bit of coin out for that would certainly be a nice way to let him know you like what he does and a bit of encouragement and feedback for him. Of course there are still the couple of sites mentioned and who's to say that you can't do both?

Enjoy your karma, after all you earned it.

Mag Rack (on demand channel on cable) has a program called Guitar Express. They have backing tracks on their website. It's a few clicks away from http://www.magrack.com .

By the way. Thanks for the other urls in this post.

I think you can still download the tracks. Some might not make sense without the video but some are for well known tunes. Right now I see a whole lot of backing tracks for soloing (which are probably just somebody strumming some chords + drums) and 'Magic Carpet Ride' , 'Truckin' etc.

Some of us here have tons of backing tracks floating around. They are not that hard to make. I have tons of them where I used a small cheap keyboard with a built in drums, a double cassette deck and do sound on sound. now with computers in the for front theres no limit to tracks for recording.

I like to use a program called GuitarPro ( http://www.guitar-pro.com/en/index.php )

GuitarPro tabs allow you to listen to the song, and also lets you to turn down an instrument, such as guitar, so you can play the part.

The program is not free, but it does have a trial period. You can get the tabs for your favorite songs at http://mysongbook.com/
