WONDERFUL TONIGHT – ERIC CLAPTON (Key of G)

INTRO: (PLAY FIRST FOUR LINES OF FIRST VERSE)

VERSE 1:(use bar chord G before the Bm/F# or simply use D/F# instead)

[G] IT'S LATE IN THE [D]EVENING,

[C] SHE'S WONDERING WHAT [D]CLOTHES TO WEAR

[G] SHE PUTS ON HER [D]MAKE-UP,

[C] AND BRUSHES HER [D]LONG BLONDE HAIR

[C] AND THEN SHE [D]ASKS ME, [G] DO I [Bm/F#]LOOK ALRIGHT

AND I SAY [C]YES, YOU LOOK [D]WONDERFUL TO[G]NIGHT [D] [C] [D]

VERSE 2:(use bar chord G before the Bm/F# or simply use D/F# instead)

[G] WE GO TO A [D]PARTY, [C] AND EVERYONE [D]TURNS TO SEE

[G] THIS BEAUTIFUL [D]LADY, [C] THAT'S WALKING A[D]ROUND WITH ME

[C] AND THEN SHE [D]ASKS ME, [G] DO YOU [Bm/F#]FEEL ALRIGHT

AND I SAY [C]YES, I FEEL [D]WONDERFUL TO[G]NIGHT

BRIDGE:(use bar chord G before the Bm/F# or simply use D/F# instead)

I FEEL [C]WONDERFUL, BE[D]CAUSE I SEE THE

[G]LOVE LIGHT [Bm/F#]IN YOUR EYES. AND THE [C]WONDER, OF IT [D]ALL

IS THAT YOU [C]JUST DON'T REAL[D]LIZE [NC]HOW MUCH I [G]LOVE YOU

SOLO: [D] [C] [D] [G] [D] [C] [D]

VERSE 4:(use bar chord G before the Bm/F# or simply use D/F# instead)

[G] IT'S TIME TO GO [D]HOME NOW, [C] AND I'VE GOT AN ACHING [D]HEAD

[G] SO I GIVE HER THE [D]CAR KEYS, [C] AND SHE HELPS ME TO [D]BED

[C] AND THEN I [D]TELL HER, [G] AS I [Bm/F#]TURN OUT THE LIGHT

I SAY MY [C]DARLING, YOU WERE [D]WONDERFUL TO[G]NIGHT [D]

OH MY [C]DARLING, YOU WERE [D]WONDERFUL TO[G]NIGHT

OUTRO:(begin slow down on final C – D, and single strum final G)

[D] [C] [D] [G] [D] [C] [D] [G]*

NOTES:

Sounds best to hit the full chord and then either lightly do partial strums or just pick a few notes of the chord.

Bm/F# = 2 2 4 4 3 2 (low to high)

D/F# = X X 4 2 3 2 or 2 0 0 2 3 2 (low to high)

Since this is the "Easy" Guitar Data Base > Another alternative for the G to Bm/F# transition would be to play a very open G chord voiced like this > X X 0 0 0 X, giving you plenty of time to set up for the Bm/F#, which could also be played X X 4 4 3 2.

E doesn't = MC2, E = Fb

For Chris's benefit, DDUUD strumming also works really well with this song.

All the best

Matt

Maybe someone can post an east solo for this? Wes??

Wonderful arrangement. I should have this down in a couple of weeks, if I can get the barre down. (Stinkin short fat fingers...) :?

OK - Here's the intro tabbed off the original recording... somewhat combined with the acoustic version since the lead guitar doesn't fade out the first time around. So this is the version you want for solo performance.

Intro:

1/E |-------------------|--------------|---------------|-7-8-10-|-10-|
2/B |-----10b11b10-8-10-|-10b11b10-8---|-10b11b10-8-10-|--------|this|
3/G |-7-----------------|------------9-|---------------|--------|note|
4/D |-------------------|--------------|---------------|--------|last|
5/A |-------------------|--------------|---------------|--------|time|
6/E |-------------------|--------------|---------------|--------|only|

E doesn't = MC2, E = Fb

This was one of the first songs I learned to play. I play it fingerstyle almost exactly as you laid it out with one exception - I don't play the Bm/F#. I go straight from a full bar of G (open G) to Em - at the time I learned this it was much easier to play that way and it sounds fine so I never bothered to add the extra cord. The fingerpicking pattern I use is

bass note - g string - b string - g string - e string - b string - g string - b string.

For the G into D, it would go like this:

E---------------3-----------------------------2--------------
A---------0--------0------0----------3-----------3-----3----
D-----0------0--------0----------2------2-----------2-------
G----------------------------0-------------------------------
B-------------------------------------------------------------
E--3---------------------------------------------------------

etc.

Yeah I've seen that pattern on a couple of sheet music versions. It sounds good but it's not like the original recording that I tabbed from. I really like the string bending version as that is the heart of the instantly recognizible intro.

Obviously you can play it however you like, but it always surprises me when I see sheet music that it not based on the original recording... or skips the intro all together.

I agree completely - I incorporate the bending intro and breaks with this. The song just wouldn't be the same without it!

In your tab notation: 14bhb14, what does the h signify. Is it b(bend up) h(halftone) b (bend release)?

Yes. Unfornately Microsoft Word does not allow me use the marks that one would see in professional tab. So bend a half a step (target note is what you would hear on the 15th fret) and then bend it back down to the original tone. So it's 14 "b" bend "h" half "b" back to 14.

E doesn't = MC2, E = Fb

4/D |-12-----------------|------------14-|---------------|----------|last
5/A |--------------------|---------------|---------------|----------|time
6/E |--------------------|---------------|---------------|----------|only

Are both of these the intro or are they 2 different versions? Or do you play the first part one time and the second part 2 times?

Sorry I'm just a bit confused here...

Thanks

If you play them you will discover that they are both the same, just two different locations on the fretboard.

Fatter strings, fatter sound... plus it looks cooler because you're further up the neck.
