Yep, mandolins go in pairs: GG DD AA EE, in fifths. That tuning's the same as a violin, BTW.

Banjos have lots of alternate tunings like guitars do, but the "standard" banjo tuning is pretty much the same as the higher 5 strings of a guitar in Open G, except that the fifth string is an octave higher than the low G of an open G guitar. gDGBD. (I don't usually make those octave distinctions with little letters, but that's a weird setup to a guitarist.) If you're used to playing in Open G, a banjo won't seem completely foreign. (And banjo chords work on an Open G guitar.)

Never could get my head around the banjo, to me it just sounds awful, but the mandolin sounds wonderful. Hope you have a lot of fun with it Chris

The only thing that keeps me from realising my full potential is the depressing awareness that it wouldn't take much time or effort...

Dog, check out this thread: http://www.bigroadblues.com/dcforum/DCForumID2/518.html

And this one: http://www.bigroadblues.com/dcforum/DCForumID31/401.html

You can definitely play some cool blues on a banjo.

Some folks even play one with a slide.

And back to the topic, a lot of good blues has been played on a mandolin. (And on a fiddle, for that matter.)

Well, got my new mandolin, Its pretty nice and sounds OK, but I have broke both my E strings At the loop part were they catch on to the hook in the tail piece, so I will be getting new strings in the morning  I have read that they put pretty crappy strings on them and should be replaced ASAP anyway. --the dog

Darn, darn, darn it.... now I have to start saving for a banjo too...

I had a look at the mandolin you're buying and it looks identical to mine apart from the electrics and the fact that mine says "Johnson" on the headstock and yours says "Rogue". Wouldn't surprise me if they were made in the same factory.

Hope you enjoy playing it Smokindog, and I look forward to hearing it crop up in your recordings.

Cheers Chris

EDIT: Good to hear it arrived. Sounds like you've been giving it a good thrashing already! I grabbed some new strings when I bought mine, so fitting them is today's job. :)

At least you're not going to cop jokes about your tiny Rogue. I may just score a few comments about the size of my Johnson...

But at least I know that I've also got a big one. (Yep, it's a hollow bodied accoustic/electric... quite large... 8) )

I checked your link and they are indeed indentical. What a coincidence both buying them at the same time. Great minds as you say...
