.... especially to get any sort of proper sound using the capo on the 8th and open e tuning. any advice?

Okay why in the seventh level of hades are you using a capo on the eighth fret?

Okay first of all have you checked your intonation?
If you haveand everything is the way it is suppose to be tune to Open G Capo at the fifth fret and try it and see how it sounds. If it still sounds off then you have got an intonation problem with your guitar

 Darned books. I never should have learned how to read. I'll find it in G somewhere then. My strat is sittin and waiting in G right now.
Intonation is fine. Just did it a few weeks ago and everything else sounds good.
Thanks.

You don't need to find it in G it's the same chords just different positions.
Play the C by barring across the 17th fret, the F by barring the 10th and the D by barring the 7th

I play John Barley corn at the 7th fret, you may need to re tune after you put the capo on, depending on your guitar. You can get a great sound at the 7th or 8th fret :D Traffic did JBCMD on the 7th fret. --the dog
I'm talking acoustic guitar, but it should work on a strat also 8)

Capoing(i'm inventing words) should be easier on a strat, since the intonation is better, and the neck is thinner.
As far as the 7th or 8th fret, "Life's a Long Song" and "Cheap Day Return" by Jethro Tull are at the 7th, and "Cat's in the Cradle" by Harry Chapin is at the 8th-all on acoustic mind you.

Is that 'for' the song You Can't Always Get What You Want? The strummy part? In the key of C, right? That would be right - 8th fret. I'm trying to remember the recording and yah, it's pretty much way up there. Does it go out of tune up there, or it just sounds weird? If it's that song, I think Keith might've used Nashville stringing to get that light, 'brushy' sound.
I used to capo on the 9th to do Here Comes The Sun because I had my 12-string tuned down to D standard. That was a little cramped, but then I saw Concert for Bangladesh and either George or the guy from Badfinger had his guitar capoed way up there too - for the high part.
That is indeed what the sheet music shows, but I've always just played it in standard tuning without the capo.

I think Paul simon does 'scarborough fair' with capo on 7th fret.(check out david's lesson for more information)
And suppose if you happened to have an SG , i guess you could fix a capo on twelveth fret...

That was one of my all time favorite albums. I don't even know if I still have it. If I do it will be the third one since the first two were worn thin and worn out durning my college days. (That and Fleetwood Mac's Rumors). Will have to look into getting it on CD I guess. Will definately have to get the sheet music for JBCMD.
I love when someone here reminds me of an old favorite. It is like running into an old friend after many years and recalling the memories. Thanks Dog.

I'm getting ready to do JBC with geoo and pbee ( and others) helping me out with the vocals. I'm lookind for someone that can play flute and maybe piano around it, and someone to add some percussion maybe( tambouurine, etc).--the dog
TP's right, that's Open G capoed on 5. If you want to do it like Keef, take off the sixth string while you're at it.
"A cheerful heart is good medicine."
that song is soooo playable in standard tuning.
