Pedal steel is something I've always been interested in but, as one might suspect, getting a left-handed one isn't something that happens on a regular basis. Have any of you pedal steel buffs heard of "Pedalmaster" pedal steels? Roy Thomas seems to make lefties on demand and I was just wondering if a beginner's model might be worth the investment.

I have heard of them, don't know much about them; You may want to hang out on a steel guitar forum & ask that question. But, have you sat down at a standard steel to see if you could make it work at all?
I can't recall ever seeing anyone play it left handed, although I am sure there are ones out there. I used to know the pro's history better than I can recall now, but I do know that there are quite a few top shelf players that are left handed that do play it right handed. Since it is such a complex & expensive instrument, there weren't any left handed models produced in the early years of the instrument, so you were forced to play it the "wrong way"! :mrgreen:

Sounds cool; I like to talk shop anytime. I must admit though, I am not up on the "latest & greatest" stuff out there. :lol: Since I am in a burned out period (Seems like I go thru several of those) I haven't keep up with current happenings in country music, etc.
A big prob. for me is, since I am a natural at this instrument, I don't really ever need to practice it that much. I can be away from it for months & then sit down & cut a studio recording without any practice whatsoever. The problem with that is you tend to not practice on a regular basis & try out new things.
It doesn't seem to affect my playing all that much though; I can "hear" so much that the instrument has potential for, that I can pull new stuff out of it pretty easily. I can almost "see" the music coming out of the instrument! Wow, that's heavy stuff!!! :mrgreen: I am not meaning to be "braggadocios" with these statements, but just want y'all to know where I'm coming from! :lol:
Now, the 6 string electric is another matter for me; I must constantly watch my fingers & be thinking about what I am doing with it. Funny, the guitar seems to be the instrument that gives me the most challenge. Drums/Bass/Banjo/Pedal Steel etc., all the other stuff comes fairly easy to me. It is odd... :roll:

as for country music, I stopped listening to contemporary country when I saw someone wioth a Flying V on stage in a country band. the new country does not fit me. I love forst wave country. 50's early 60's. that grew out of my liking of conutry swing, from the pre pedal steel days. lap stel and a swing strumming with amazing jazz type licks (Joe Maphis and the like).
yeah, the early post WWII country is great.
if I could be reborn I would want to start pedal steel early. as much as I want to play it I find the skill needed to play what I hear is waaay beyond the time I have now. and like I said, I am having so much fun getter better on the six string guitars.
oh well.

Paul Franklin is usually the only steeler I see on the TV music award shows lately.
Les Pauls, Explorers. big pedal boards torn jeans. yeeha. new country.

newer country seems to have more posers with clever songwriting using hired guns in the studios.
Nashville must use only the one guy on tele. scanning the country radio dial I seem to hear his licks all across the bandwidths.
like any popular music it is a commodity. its a living. meh.
there are some really great players, writers and producers making country music today.
you really have to look hard and deep.
oddly enough I found some good country on soundclick.
and it comes out of Norway.!
my tastes grew from me being curious and tracing the line of country backwards.
the further back I got the more I liked it.
I have to say Brad Paisley is a killer guitar player. really knows his stuff.
His latest album called "Play: The Guitar Album" has only about 3 songs that have vocals. The rest is just him playing the guitar....hence the name, incredible album. Got alot of bad reviews because it's not his typical stuff, but the people that appreciate what he can do love it to death.

Look up "Rollin' the ballad of Big and Rich" even has rap in it by Cowboy Troy, it's a unique song. They aren't the most popular duo in country music, but they are definitley different.

I know what you mean; "Country" has its' own unique sound, & it should remain that way, in pure form. Anything else is a crossover, blending effect such as country-rock, the outlaw sound, etc. Even when Alabama came on the scene years ago, a lot of the "purists" didn't want to follow along.
it would be the same as taking bluegrass & throwing a trombone in there! (I know, there's probably a youtube clip of that!) :mrgreen:
