I am looking for a decent mic for some home recording. I'm not a huge fan of using a processor to connect directly in to my PC for recording the guitar as I have tried it and cant seem to get the sound I want, much rather the idea of using a mic to catch the sound from my speaker cab.

I have a budget of about £100 ($210) so any suggestions would be great :)

Oh and could anyone tell me what type of mic would be best to use. I will be using it to record vocals and to record my guitar and I tend to switch between quite a clean guitar sound to a very overdriven guitar sound quite a lot.

Thanks all.

Audio Technica AT-2020 & AT-2021

besides the SM57 large condensers make for good acoustic recording.
CAD and Audio Technica have some in your price range.

Pre-amps > mics.

Find yourself a used SM-57 in a pawn shop for $20.

Then go and find the very best pre- you can with the rest.

Thanks guys.

I already have an SM58 which I believe is a dynamic mic. Would this be good for any recording or is the condenser the best way to go?

Cheers.

SM58 is a great dynamic mike for vocals.
wide condensers are great for miking acoustic instruments.

What would be the best type of mic for recording the sound from a guitar amp?

medium to small condensors work well for amps.

Something like a Rode NT3 or Rode NT55

I used an SM57 to mike an amp. it was an old Sears amp. tiny speaker. the results were cool.
I posted them on my soundclick music site. look for Meteor.

That sounds great! I love the lightly overdriven lead sound that kicks in, sounds slightly crunchy but still warm an subtle. Great little song too.

I like Meteor as a song. Nice chord prog and so on.

I Smoke his Brand is pretty damn amazing actually, too!

Meteor was fun to record. the Sm57 was about eight inches away from the amp. the amp was turned full on as were both guitars. (a Hwy 1 tele playing the rhythm and a strat plus playing the lead). I doubled the track for the tele and then delayed one of those tracks a nano second. it really expanded the sound. I loved it.
I read that the sound pressure from an amp is pretty strong. a wide condenser mike would not be the best choice for close miking. however, I do use a wide condenser for miking an acoustic. I put it in front of the guitar towards where the neck joins the body. the mike is roughly 18inches away.
I want to go back to Meteor some day and make it a longer jam. it is short now because I was just testing things.
the song I Smoke His Brand was very enjoyable and rewarding for me. it is a very personal song that just happened for the most part. and then I got a great pedal steel guitar player to add those licks. blows me away. his name is Joe Savage. he gigs all the time in Minneapolis. I met him at a steel guitar jam last year. I was playing in a pick up backing band to showcase pedal steelers. Joe recently played on Prarrie Home Companion. I feel so honored.

one thing I have found is that if you ask for help it comes back in spades. musicians are a generous lot.

thanks again for listening.

I have a Studio Projecy B1, it is a condenser mic. I'm happy with it. I paid around 100€ so it is in your budget.

(BTW, I agree with the comments on Dogbite's Meteor. I don't remember if I said before but that recording started my personal quest for the tone. I love those sounds.)

Nuno...get a Tubescreamer Turbo. I would not have my tone without it.

that said, that little amp had a speaker four by eight inches; yes, oval,. it was asy to overdrive.
with our bigger amps and neighbors living close by it is difficult to turn the amp's volume up to 10 and get the same sound.

the tubescreamer, in my humble opinion achieves that.
