I got a new m-audio firewire yesterday and am generally very happy with it. After a bit of head scratching I got it up and running, it sounds good and I can record on it with good results. the only problem I have is the latency is pretty bad. no matter what i do its about the same. I am using audacity with xp w/sp2, its a new PC w/ 3ghz, 1gig mem. I downloaded asio 4all per nils suggestion and made no difference. I'm using a 258 sample rate but have lowered it and raised it and that makes no difference. :? :? :? any suggestions appreciated :D --the dog

Did you select ASIO4ALL as the recording and playback device in Audacity? Also, did you go into ASIO4ALL and try some of the tweak options?

No- it doesn't give that option, and yes I did :DTry coosing ASIO4ALL first in the FILE/PREFERENCES then on the main screen. It does show up there but not on the main screen until you enable it in preferences.

Don't use Asio4all. First right click the speaker Icon in the Right hand corner of the screen/selectadjust audio properties/audio tab/ make sure that the firewire 410 (possibly m-audio Asio) is your default recording and playback device/ You can keep your onboard soundcard as the default midi playback device or microsoft midi mapper. Now go into your recording program. If you loaded Abelton Live M-audio edition or Protools LE choose M-audio ASIO for your Asio driver. If you're still working in Audacity still you should be able to choose the 410 as your input. If you are still getting latency, go to your M-Audio docking control panel in the lower right hand corner of the screen and play with the buffer settings. 256samples is standard. You shouldn't have to record in anything higher than 24bit 44.1Khz. Many people stick with 16bit 44.1 Khz. The average person will not be able to tell the difference. Try that. If this fails you post again and I will try to help. You want to avoid asio direct monitoring if you can. This will prevent you from hearing your effects in real time. Any effects that you may have loaded in the send chain will cause latency. If you must have effects loaded, use them in the insert chain. Not to fret, you can change all this once you've done your recording.

well, I still have a latency problem  I checked the default recording and playback( m-audio FW AP 1/2) also in audacity I chose the same as my input. I tried adjusting my buffer settings down and up ( makes no difference) I tried recording in 24 bit and 16 bit 44.1 KHz ( makes no or little difference) I disabled the asio monitoring and switched of the direct monitoring. Like I said, it records real sweet and plays back just fine. here is the a-audio web page with the specs to my device.

I have every thing hooked up like the instructions. I run my mixer into the line in jacks, the out jacks (1/2) to my receiver. and of course the firewire into the 1394 input in front of my PC. HP pavilion a1034n I know this has to be something simple I'm overlooking :? :? :? any Ideas :?:

Have you tried direct hardware monitoring? You won't hear the software effects (which your not adding with Audacity until later anyway) but it does completely eliminate software delay. This should send your input from your mixer directly out to the receiver. Assuming the receiver is what you are using as the output speakers.

ASIO4ALL was what I use when I am using Kristal Live In or monitoring to the laptop speakers. The 410 is supposed to have better ASIO then the MobilPreUSB so it may not be necessary

There shouldn't be any latency at all. Where you selected the default recording device there is an option to use ony preferred devices. Select that. What is your signal chain like could you describe how you have everything connected? From guitar to monitors.

I have my guitar >amp> amp line out > mixer>Mixer line out to M-audio line in>M audio line Out to reciever/speakers and ofcourse the fire wire from the M-audio firewire to the PC.
I am useing audacity. I have checked every thing you have mentioned so far. This link has a diagram of the input/output panel http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/FirewireAudiophile-focus.html

The manual says you can do direct monitoring of your input by changing settings in the "410 mixer panel". What you are looking for is any setting that says anything about direct monitoring. If you find the right one it will send the input directly out to your speakers bypassing the software for zero latency.

Did you try the A/B switch?

It says,

"momentary switch for A/Bing two software-assignable headphone sources or switching ASIO monitoring on/off"

I'm pulling at straws here.

Sorry, not a big help. I'll go now.

Definitely want that asio monitoring on. Have you tried using the bundled programs that come with the unit? There should be some decent software there. I don't understand how you could be getting latency. Is it latency or are you getting a delay effect like an echo?

So, hey dog, did you get this resolved? It's been a week or so. I have seen latency discussions that may pertain to your problem as I have been out and about on the web and wondering if you have it figured out yet.
