I assume you just installed Audacity. Lame is a freeware MP3 encoder and is not installed with audacity. Google 'lame_enc.dll' and download it, then select the file from audacity. Now audacity will call upon the dll file when you're exporting an MP3.

I have a similar problem with Audacity. I have the lame file. I can open the Lame file with Audacity no problem. But when i want to export a music file as an MP3 it won't let me. Save is grayed out and it doesn't ask for the Lame file. What should i do?

First off make sure it is the current or recent Lame file lame_enc.dll. Put the .dll file in the Windows/System32/DLLCACHE folder. Then go into Audacity preferences/File formats and do a find Lame and locate it in that folder for Audacity. You should be good to go.

Hey I was just about to type all that! :D

You can also save the .dll file in the Audacity/Plug Ins folder.

You should NOT be trying to "open" the .dll file. Just put it in your folder of choice, then as Nils said click "Find" to tell Audacity where the file is located.

Ditto the problem.

I saved lame_enc.dll to the Audacity/PlugIns folder (I couldn't find a DLLCACHE folder in Windows/System32).

Then I opened Audacity>Edit>Preferences>File Format

it says "MP3 Exporting Plug In not found"

clicked "Find Library" (to the right of the above message) and a window opens asking if you want to locate the lame_enc.dll now. Clicked Yes.
as Nils said click "Find" to tell Audacity where the file is located.

(Is "Find Library" what you mean by "Find", or is there another "Find" somewhere else that I'm missing?)

New window opens with the PlugIns folder open at the top, but no files are listed as being in the folder, even though that's where I saved the lame_enc.dll to.
At the bottom, "File name: lame_enc" and "Files of type: Only lame_enc.dll"
Underneath is a check box for "Open as Read Only"
You should NOT be trying to "open" the .dll file. Just put it in your folder of choice

The only choices are to "Open" or "Cancel".

Any advice? Thank you for any help you can give! :D

Almost there!

When you downloaded Lame, did it download a .zip file? If so, you need to extract that, then you can browse and find the lame_enc.dll file, the same way you are doing right now.

If you are using Windows XP, you can open a zip file with the built in stuff. Just double click on it and copy the files out of there. If not, you will have to get a zip program, try http://www.winzip.com . Only worry about downloading winzip if you don't have XP.

Once you have them extract, then the browsing window you were on will show the lame_enc.dll file in the list there. Open it up and you'll be rockin.

Yes, "Find Library."

I meant don't try to open the .dll file to run it, as you would do with an executable file (.exe, for example.) Sorry for the confusion.

But yes, in Audacity, click "open" once you find it (or just double-click the file name,) to tell Audacity where it's located.

And as Banre said, make sure it's unzipped first.

Not only will you soon be making MP3s, but you'll be an open-source techno whiz as well! :D

Hi,
I've just done this. Open the Audacity file you want to export, then -- File>Export as MP3 - Audacity will then ask if you want to find the lame encoder and provides a browser for you to do this. Provided you've unzipped the download, you should see lame_enc.dll and a double click will export the Audacity file. It all happens automatically thereafter.
Hope this hasn't confused the issue further.

Now how do I get the MP3 over to the Games>Guess that Riff forum? I tried to Copy and Paste, but the Paste function is greyed out when I'm ready to paste.

A lot of us use

1) our own webspace. I'll assume that you don't have that.
2) A service like http://putfile.com . They work. And they are free.
3) A service like http://www.dmusic.com or http://www.soundclick.com . Both are made for musicians to post music on. And both are totally free.

And then just post a link to the file that you have uploaded.

hilch,

I couldn't find a folder called that, so I put the lame_enc.dll to the Audacity/PlugIns folder. I had to do a search to find that folder.

Provided you've unzipped the download, you should see lame_enc.dll and a double click will export the Audacity file

For me, double-clicking got me a deadend, but right-clicking it worked to unzip.

Stick with it. I somehow finally got it to work. If I can, you can too. Keep asking questions. :D
