Isn't it GREAT to know that there are so many EXTREMELY talented women guitar players out there? I've found myself searching the discount bins because, for some reason, that's where a lot of their stuff ends up (like me getting Kaki King's "Legs To Make Us Longer" for 80 cents). I've NEVER entertained the thought of being that good (I'm too old to get that good), but I have a 12 year old neice who is going to get her first guitar for her birthday in April (I gave her 13 year old brother one for Christmas and she has SEVERE guitar envy), and my hopes for her are that she CAN become that good if she'll just practice, practice, practice and then practice some more. Maybe we'll have another talented female guitarist in a few more years! :D

Recommended:

Beth Orton -- especially the Trailer Park disc, supposedly inspired by the Bladerunner sound track. The style is a mix of British folk and pop, sometimes eerily beautiful .

Rosie Flores -- Speed of Sound collection. Rosie plays country swing and rockbilly.

Liz Phair -- Exile in Guyville and Whip Smart. Straight ahead, rough stuff from Liz -- very explicit and not for kids or the faint-hearted. This is nothing like Phair's recent eponymous release, which is polished and rather tame (though I like it too). Exile is sort of electric folk punk. Whip Smart is a bit more mainstream and accessible. This is love it or hate it stuff.

I just discovered Tristan Prettyman the other day. The best way I can describe her is a female Dave Matthews with a blazing voice. Her guitar skills are darn good, to say the least. I put her up with Ani, but not quite Kaki. Her live shows are hilarious too, she tells awesome stories that you would never expect from such a cute, innocent girl. Namely, on the show I have, she talks about passing gas and wanting a gay friend to go shopping with. Unexpected to say the least.

Other Fantastic female players you might want to check out are Ana Popovic, Rory Block, Deborah Coleman, and Jennifer Batten (I personally saw Miss Batten play with Jeff Beck and Match him NOTE FOR NOTE)

The Donnas are getting some serious guitar magazine coverage over here in the UK, but no TV or radio exposure. Zilch. Nichts. Rien. Absolutely nuttin.

There is definitely something not quite right when it comes to showcasing female artists.

Best,

Tristan Prettyman is my favourite female guitarist.

I saw her on a Taylor promotion DVD... Since then I've been hooked. Im from the UK and its hard to get hold of her material, so I've logged onto her website and had to pay for everything in dollars. The conversion is worth it and my favourite song (so far) is Evaporated.

I think you are all forgetting about the God Mother of Rock'n'Roll Peggy Jones AKA Lady Bo. Sat in with bo Diddley on many, many occasions, born 1940 and still playing today. Check out this old black and white video and watch her sway.

I have to watch that video over and over, a true classic Jeeeeez, I'm a sad man.

Here is another, not such good quality as the first but in the same vein.

It's known as "Music In Melodious Empathy"
