Vacation Notice:

We currently taking our summer holidays. There will be no more new lessons for the duration of our holiday. The next term of classes will begin July 1. While we are away feel free to review the material already taught on this site. To get started quickly take a look at our About us page.

We look forward to seeing you all again soon. Have a great summer!

New Lessons

OK, on with the new lessons. We have a double shot of beginners lessons that should keep beginners busy for at least a couple weeks. They cover the topics of strumming and picking.

Margaritaville – Easy Songs for Beginners # 9
by David Hodge (08 May 2001)
Today we’re going to learn Margaritaville by Jimmy Buffet. In and of itself, this will not take very long. We will only need three chords. Once you’ve gotten the strumming part down and have a fairly good grasp of the various chords, you can start to put together actual arrangements of songs. Even a relative beginner can get into this in a big way and you will be amazed at the simple things you can do to dramatically improve your playing, simply by approaching a song with a little thought and a little theory.

House Of The Rising Sun – Easy Songs for Beginners # 10by David Hodge (13 May 2001)
In this lesson we’re going to learn two different fingerpicking patterns for House of the Rising Sun, a song performed by the Animals way back in the sixties. The first will be very straightforward, simply arpeggiating the chords in a very easy finger style. Then we will go on and doctor that version up a bit, throwing in slightly more complex picking which will include a bit of a moving bassline as well as using a standard alternating bassline in a few spots.

During our summer break some of you may want to review the entire Easy Songs for Beginners collection. Try reading them in order as they build on techniques developed in previous lessons. These links will help you get started:

  1. Horse With No Name (part 1)
  2. Horse With No Name (part 2)
  3. For What It’s Worth
  4. Feelin’ Alright
  5. Three Marlenas
  6. Before You Accuse Me
  7. Roll Over Beethoven
  8. (Going To) Kansas City
  9. Margaritaville
  10. House Of The Rising Sun

If you are looking for a particular topic or lesson you can try using our sophisticated search engine.

When we return from holiday there will be a lot more lessons, including a new feature that has Easy Songs for Intermediates. For those of you who have been following the Easy Songs for Beginners lessons from day one you must already be moving beyond the beginner stages.

The Beatles – 1
No band on earth but The Beatles could have a greatest hits compilation top the charts more than 30 years after breaking up! In a few short months, the CD 1 – featuring The Beatles’ 27 British and American Number One singles – has sold more than 20 million copies and is well on its way to becoming the best-selling album of all time. We are very proud to present these matching songbooks to this landmark release. This week I have added a few new links that might be worth your while. First is another site for the Other Side:

  • GuitarGirls.com – Songwriting writing contest as well as an online community for female singer-songwriters.

This last site I have added really takes the cake. It is something I stumbled across recently and have been spending a long time there. They have free hour long video guitar lessons that you can watch either live or at your leisure. There are a lot of enjoyable lessons to watch. Digevent: Guitar Mania – Really cool guitar lessons hosted by Marc Seal. You can join Marc live every Friday, at 4pm Pacific or check out the over 35 hours of free video lessons on this incredible site.

Email of the Week

This week’s email of the week speaks for itself.

5/04/01

I am very sorry to inform you that I have recently returned my guitar back to the store. Since there is no way that I can benefit from your free newsletter, I would like to request that you please take me off of your mailing list.

Thank you very much.

Hey, no problem. It is done. Sorry to hear about your guitar.

I disagree with your opinion, though. I think there are many ways for you to benefit from reading this newsletter. As we are beginning our holidays here there will be no further newsletters until July 1. I plan to spend some time during the holiday making a list of ways you can benefit from this newsletter even if you don’t have a guitar.

If you have a topic or question to discuss during the break you can either post it to our Guitar Forums or send an email to one of our teachers. By now you have probably realized that most of our lessons originate with readers suggestions or questions.

That is all for this week. When you’ve finished going through all the new lessons and links added don’t wait for the next newsletter before coming back. There are more than enough lessons and topics covered on this site to keep any guitar player busy for years.

Please bookmark www.guitarnoise.com and check back often.

Other than that, enjoy your music, enjoy your holiday, and I’ll be writing again soon.

Peace,

Paul Hackett
