Guitar and Bass Lessons

Goalines Not Deadlines
By Jamie Andreas (01 June 2002)
If we are dedicated to our growth as artists who play the guitar, we must be very smart to get the best out of ourselves. Part of the difficulty in doing so lies in combating the forces and conditioning of the world around us. The world around us tends very strongly to condition us in ways that will lead us far from our goals as artists.

Acoustic Guitar Tips

Tenor GuitarLast week our acoustic guitar tip concerned the 12 string guitar. Perhaps next week we will return to the six string, but for this week we stick with something different – the tenor guitar. While the tip itself is very short, we have more information below in our email of the week.

This week our tip comes to us courtesy of Guitar Man Acoustic Guitar Tips.

Tenor Guitar

Tenor guitars only have FOUR strings and are are tuned CGDA low to high or sometimes GDAE. I’ve even seen people tune them like the first four strings on a six string guitar, DGBE low to high.

We want to print your guitar tips here. Please send your tips to Guitar Noise with “Guitar Tips” as the subject of your message.

Recommended Reading

It has been a long time since I recommended a guitar tab book in this section. As far as ZZ Top Guitar Tab books go this one is the best.

James LaBrie’s MullMuzzler 2
Ex-Dream Theatre frontman James LaBrie comes to us with an exciting solo album. Don’t worry if you missed MullMuzzler 1, you won’t be lost; this album stands out all on its own.

Niacin – Time Crunch
Progressive/Fusion band Niacin’s newest release is certainly a welcome addition to anyone’s record collection. Featuring Billy Sheehan, John Novello and Dennis Chambers.

Email of the Week

Tenor Guitar
I have a tenor guitar which has four strings. It is a Regal Tenor Guitar made by the Regal Musical Instrument Co. of Chicago. It has six tuning pegs but only four strings and was obviously made to have only four strings. Would you tune it like a six string guitar, except start with the fourth string? Thanks for any advice.

David’s Response
Traditionally, tenor guitars were tuned like tenor banjos, that is, in fifths like a mandolin. From low to high: C G D A.

Like many things, you can have all sorts of different tunings. Celtic (Irish) musicians favor G D A E tuning (and that makes me wonder that the reason there are six tuning pegs is so that you can use different sets of strings…). Ani DiFranco uses all sorts of alternately tuned tenor guitar in her songs.

I hope that this helps. Thank you again for the email and I look forward to hearing how things are going with your tenor guitar.

Peace

All the best,
