Saxon – Killing Ground

Legendary Metal band Saxon are at it again. Killing Ground is the new album and the guys are obviously still in fine shape.

The music has not aged. Judging by the photo in the middle of the booklet, the guys have, but not the music… This is a nice reminder of what Heavy Metal is really about. Saxon are part of the original Metalheads of the seventies and eighties (AC/DC, Black Sabbath, etc). A time when it wasn’t “Thrash Metal”, “Speed Metal”, “Psychotic Metal” or whatever. Just plain good Rock played loudly.

It starts off really nice with its intro (bizarrely entitled Intro), followed by the title track. Oddly enough, the weakest song on the album is probably In the Court of the Crimson King (King Crimson) not credited as having been written by Pete Sinfield and Ian MacDonald. I’m not saying that it’s not good. The intensity of that song should be in the performance rather than in the distorted guitars.

Great for remembering what true metal is all about. A good album!
