The Tangent – The World That We Drive Through

Roine Stolt of The Flower Kings and Transatlantic is back with another of his bands, The Tangent.

Obviously there are some similarities to The Flower Kings, as the band also includes Jonas Reingold and Zoltan Csorsz of the Kings, but the sound is a… tangent… Sorry, couldn’t help it.

This, their second effort is a rather good album. Comprised of only five songs, the shortest clocking in at 7 minutes 39 seconds, and the longest at 18:22. Certainly no disapointments there.

How good is it? Very! Althought the first track, The Winning Game is probably the most Flower Kings-like song, the album moves off in a different direction afterwards. About The Winning Game, I have to mention the ending that has an ingenious use of the old seventies song What the World Needs Now. It fits in quite nicely and I think it was simply brilliant to use it. This track is also my favourite on the CD although I do listen to it to the end.

Roine Stolt is one of the most prolific songwriters out there. Although some of the tracks he writes may be less good than others, they’re never boring. If you don’t know who he is, it’s about time you discovered him.
