I can't cast a vote here. Because when I play guitar sometimes I finger pick, and sometimes I use a pick. Wether its on my strat or my PR5-E, I use both. I'd recommend adding an neither and both vote.

as mainly a guitar player, i find getting any speed with fingers exceedingly difficult...

Both. But I dont really count as a guitar player.

I do occasionally bring out the old bass. As I am about to do now.

I think, it depends on what music are you playing. I prefer to play with my fingers, cause I can feel the strings better and it takes not a lot of time to change the style and the position I'm playing (I mean tapin'-slap/pop-neck or bridge playing...). However if my fingers are positioned near to the bridge, it sounds like was played with a pick. And what about the speed... If you'll seek for more speed, you'll get it. And if it's not enought, what you can do with yuor two fingers - then gear your third finger up!!!

yeh well, I prefer the sound of finger pickin and the skill, but my bands music is too fast, and the strings are too floppy as they're in drop B most times so pick is the only effective way to go there

Back in the day, I used a pick for the real simple lines (I mean, we're talking about Sex Pistols here). Most of the time I use my fingers.

fingerpicking is mostly in classical guitar.in bass guitar too.depends upon the type you play. Its best to be proficient one by one.Don't mix em together
