I've got a Richwood Strat Copy which is a solid wood body. Its damn heavy! I'm wondering if there are lightweight electric guitars available, or if the weight/body is required for sustaining string vibrations. Totally noobie question, but quite important to me because I have a weak back from all the time i spend at a desk. :)

There are some lighter guitars - Gibson SGs are pretty light. I have a Paul Reed Smith Mira that weighs just 6.5 pounds, which is very nice for casual noodling at the desk. You might want to look at some of the smaller hollowbody electrics too. Less wood, less weight.

I agree 100%. I did this because though I still think LP's are fantastic, I didn't want one hanging on my shoulder now.

SG guitars are verry light and neck heavy (neck wants to drop). Les Pauls are heavy in general and body heavy (neck wants to go up).

I second the Gibson SG. I own a Faded SG and it is far lighter than my Les Paul, Strat, Tele, or Casino. It also has awesome tone in my opinion (but I lean toward Gibson tone). I don't know how much it weighs, but it is super-light.
