Great site- tons of info! I'm fishing for an explanation for what may be Carter style strumming: pick bass note, strum, pick alternate bass note, strum... If I have it right you use the chord's root & 5th notes but what exactly do you strum? Only 3 strings or sometimes 4 depending on the chord? Is the 4th string sometimes used for the bass?
I would stick a cute smiley face in, but none of them match the truly dazed & confused look this 50+ gal usually has! But be encouraged, if I can tough it this far (mostly fingerstyle) in a couple years, there's hope for anybody.

You are mostly right.
I have seen the 3rd sometimes used.
Most books will show you strum the remaining strings.
I sometimes just strum the whole chord and it still sounds ok if not even a bit fuller.
A number of songs use alternating bass strums,
Me and Bobby McGee,
Man of Constant Sorrow,
alot of Johnny Cash.
