Now that I'm aware of the correct way to hold the pick, I'm having another weird problem. My index finger is hitting the strings when I pick....I tried holding my fingers higher on the pick but I have much less control and it feels odd.... any suggestions?

It's a matter of practice... and you don't want a lot of pick sticking out from between your fingers - as you noted, it gives you less control (and less speed, too).

If your index finger is hitting, take a close look at your picking hand position. Since your thumb is clearing the strings, and your index finger and thumb should be pretty much opposite each other on the pick, you can probably solve the problem by rotating your wrist slightly towards the bass strings.
