The code tag should work, but you could always use something else instead of spaces for the gaps, like dashes, so you'd have: |-||-||| or D-DU-UDU.
As long as the character isn't a space, they will be printed (browsers only display one space between words, no matter how many are in the source code - it's part of the HTML specs). Dashes are good as opposed to underscores, because you can see the gap between them and so it's easier to tell how many there are in a row.
