Chord progressions are two or more chords in a row. They're found in all kinds of music - there aren't very many songs out there with only one chord in them.
Understanding chord progressions won't directly help your chord changing, but indirectly they might - if you're playing a C chord, you'd know the likely chords that come next (F, G7, Am, D7) and perhaps be better prepared to move.
