erm on a similar note... is it worth the effort using your pinky to do scales? as in the whole finger per fret rule.... ive learnt my pentatonic scales and i started using my pinky but i was just so slow that i gave up. im pretty quick just using my other 3 fingers. is it worth me re-learning to play my scales using my pinky?

Yes.
Get that pinkie working for you and scales are the best way to do that.
