I have a smaller guitar and so think I am best trying to mimic classical position. Amazon shows 3 different products to go on the lap to support the guitar. I am looking for a homemade and inexpensive solution. (These rests actually cost more than my guitar, which came from a thrift shop.

Does anyone use a homemade rest? What are you using?

Think different.

A pile of books

A beer crate turned upside down

A log that's just a bit too big to fit in the stove

A couple of house bricks

Tool box in the garage

Alan, I think he might be talking about an arm rest rather than a footstool.

There's no need to use an arm rest - I don't. But you want your forearm to rest on the binding, and not drape across the top.

I was thinking of something to go on my lap to raise the guitar, rather than using a footstool. Experimented with a throw pillow, which was unsatisfactory. I guess I will just elevate my foot, and see if that works. Thought I would avoid contorting myself by keeping my feet on the floor, but since I have a big belly and breasts (I happen to be an overweight female)The guitar tends to slide off my lapwith the pillow.

Cushions work but not brilliantly. The Dynarette cushion however - see link - is good

What you need, if you're on a budget, is to replicate a fairly solid block that's roughly that shape - headrest out of an old car or something like that.

Hi there,

I understand that you explicitly asked for a "home made" solution vs. an off the shelf product. I think you already got some good ideas here. I personnaly used to use a small plastic trash bin that I flipped over. Not the most convenient solution for obvious reasons.

I'm not trying to convince you that you need a real footstool. Because it took me 25 years to eventually plunk down the $10 bucks to get one, but boy, in hindsight I should have made that 'investment' a long time ago. It's cheap, easy to use and it works better than any other solutions. Below is a link to a product review I did on one of the devices they sell through amazon. Again, it was less than 10 bucks, so when you think about it, it's really a no-brainer.

Link to just the video (this allows you to fast forward and skip my babbling): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_9FCYNyaaA

Apologies, the video is a little shaky at times - I used youtubes "correction tool" which made things much worse....
