how do you hammer on an open string EX:

It's just like a regular hammer-on except you just play the open string, and then fret the same string at the second fret. If you do it slow though, it'll just kill the note, it has to be a fast motion. What you posted looks like a hammer-on and then a pull-off, so you'll want to hammer-on the second fret with your finger and then quickly pull it off. However, simply taking the finger off the string won't produce a good sound. A pull-off has a sort of flicking motion to it that you have to learn. When you do it right though, it basically looks like you're bending your finger forward and then straightening it again really fast.

yeah. when I do a hammer roll on an open E I find it works better when you actually pull off a bit ; catching the string with the callous after the quick hammer. the trick is to manage the kind of sustain you want when that little pull off goes.
