My mate played me a little chord progression which I told him was Fmaj Gmaj and G#maj. He then played the same pattern on the 1st string from the first fret, then he got a bit stuck. From the pattern I looked into a scales book and the only scale that matched frets 1, 3, 4 was the Ab maj.

Is there an easy way or an online source that will give you what key sig these chord may be from?

No. If your chord names are correct, no one key contains them all.

F major and G major appear together in the key of C. G# major will appear only in the key of C# (but its equivalent, Ab major, will be in the keys of Ab, Eb, and Db). And no one key signature will ever include two chords of the same type a half step apart - as in your G major and G# major.
