Whenever I try to do a pull off, I always wind up accidentally hitting the adjacent string, which winds up causing it to slightly ring as well. The lessons that I've read about pull offs have said that you should pull off by pulling slightly down, and diagonally back, but it seems like it's inevitable to hit the adjacent string if you do it this way. Any tips on how to fix this?

youre going to slighty muffle the higher string with the planted finger.

Think of it more as a "pluck off" and pull your finger high as you pluck the string. That may help as well.

nah, that's not your best bet. if you're doing a trill or fast legato run, your picking hand won't keep up.

how to get a good hammer-on/pull-off is to practice them with just your fretting hand until you get them clean and as loud as a picked note. practice them with every finger from down low on the fretboard to up high, so you get used to the different fret spacing.
