Hi,
I thought about trying to play this
http://breizhpartitions.free.fr/en/download_score.php/639_Highland_Cathedral
on guitar. Not sure how it will go but worth a try anyway.
Problem I have is what are the notes in the smaller font. They look sort of but not quite like appogiatura,
don't seem to count in the bar tally. Are these like little fills or frills almost in the background ?

Yes, those are just grace notes to be squeezed in as briefly as possible before the real notes. But as this obviously isn't a guitar arrangement, you can pick and choose which ones you want to include. Those that sound good on the highland pipes, won't always come out so convincingly on guitar.
