I'm having trouble focusing while using a metronome.

If I count it and/or tap my foot, I can make chord switches cleaner and more accurate for a longer time, but when I bring out the metronome, I feel under pressure and mess it up.

Any ideas on how to relax before my inanimate machine overlord?

I think I understand where you are coming from..it's a bit like my wife..she is a very intelligent woman but if she has to do anything that is time limited she just falls apart.

So it sounds like your problem is purely a mental one. What you can try is slowing the tempo right down until you can comfortably make your chord changes without tensing up. Once you can nail that speed just increase it by 2 bpm. The key here isn't to make chord changes at the right tempo, it's to make chord changes while you are relaxed and not tense up. When you feel tension you will be more prone to mistakes.

You can try tapping your foot along to the beat as well, and focus on that instead of the metronome. Let us know how you're getting on with it too, and if you're seeing any progress.
