Hey all,

This is my 1st post (obviously). I can't believe how much good stuff this website has. I've read a few articles on music theory, but am a little confused. Could someone explain the difference between keys and modes. Both include some notes and exclude some notes. Also, what is the significance of keys and modes? What's the purpose?

Thanks,

M

easy questions long answers.

a key is the note a song may be in. take your pick E, F, G, A, B, C, D, and then you have the minors. that;s the basics.
Mode is different. it is the relationship of the scale notes. each mode has the notes of the scale spaced differently.
Modes give songs a flavor.

Welcome to the musical madhouse!

A mode shifts the center or starting point of the scale while keeping the same notes in the scale.

And if you're just beginning, don't worry about modes yet for a long while.

Thank you for the responses above. I have one more question today...

Somewhere, I found an article on music theory. It was titled something like "The No B***S**t music theory". It was really good, but I can't find the link and google hasn't helped. If anyone knows where it is, I'd love to read it again, now that I know a little something.

Welcome. You'll find the articles at guitarnoise.com to be well written and a good place to start. At the same time, if you're like me you'll search near and far for explanations about the many things that are difficult to understand for the beginner. It always has helped me to just keep on reading. Don't get discouraged if it takes a while to grasp some of what everyone else seems to already know.

Enjoy your karma, after all you earned it.
