I started teaching myself to play guitar a few days ago. When ever I strum, it sounds odd. It is almost as though you can hear the individual pluck of the strings (sorry if this is a bad discription.) I am playing my mother's old acoustic guitar (not sure what type.) Half of the strings are nylon and half are metal. I am not using a pick. If anyone could help, I would be very grateful :D

The metal strings are thin wire wrapped round nylon filaments, so we call them nylon too.

Yes, you will be able to hear every single string sound as you strum. Firstly, you're not really strumming fast enough; and secondly, there's quite a quick drop-off of sound when playing nylon strings.
