Ive been playing for about 6 months now and i am having trouble. I'm trying to play the intro to hotel california and i cant make the b and f# chords. I was wondering if soneone has any ideas that would help me. I can sit there for 10 minutes just trying to make the b chord and i cant get it to sound right. Thanks Tony
Welcome to GN.
Can you show us the fingering you use for those chords to start with?

you bar 1-5 strings 2nd fret finger 1
then finger 3 bars 2,3, 4 strings 4th fret
thanks for the help
Here is a chord chart from Chordie.com. When you see the chord that you need to find alternate fingerings for, just click that chordshape and it will give you a few alternate fingerings.

Just some thoughts. Discard at will. Just trying to help. :) Seriously though, I'm just trying to get a feel for where you are. Barre chords are tough to learn.
Is the high E (thinnest string) getting muted? That might make it sound differently.
When you play the chord slowly, do you get nice clear notes on each string?
Is all the force of the barre perpendicular to the fret board? If you have even the slightest up or down pressure, it pulls the chord out of tune. I fight that one myself. Still sounds better than my singing though. I digress.
How about the F#?

I never brought that part of their site up. Nice. I dig the starting point having it all (mostly) right there. The Texas Tarrantula strikes again!

:D LOL!
Here are a few more chordshapes for F# and B. I think they may be easier to finger than those on Chordie.
If you need more they came from here.

thanks for the replies, i havent found a chord that ive had this much trouble with, maybe i need to be playing longer to get these
and no when i play each string serperate it doesnt sound all that good
Tony, the barre chords aren't easy at the beginning. Try to practice them as slowly as you can. You need strengthen your index finger for the barre and also coordinate the other fingers. It is usual. Practice. :)
The B chords and the F chords are the most difficult for beginners. I struggled with them, too, as did everybody else, I believe! (Y'all correct me if I'm wrong!) The best advice I could offer would be to concentrate on barre chords for a bit. Once you get used to fingering with barres, things get much easier!

OK. No biggie. As others have stated, they are a bear. There's been thread after thread. Here's the last one. http://forums.guitarnoise.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=38853
The big thing for me was making sure I had the index finger twisted a but. The underside, or flat part, of the finger is too wussy for the job. Twist it more towards the edge closest to the headstock or top of neck. Slightly. Just practice doing just the index finger alone until you can get 'em to ring. Then introduce the 2nd half of the chords. It'll take some time.

The Jamplay video I posted above gives a good example of what Roy is talking about.

Check the links i posted in the other thread Roy mentioned. I found it helpful and Justin has a nice way of teaching. And don't worry about them not being easy. It took me exponentially longer to start playing them consistently. Still not very comfortable with all the shapes, it takes quite a while for some of us :)
