Check out Open Tuning Part I and Part II. Open G is probably the most common open tuning.

Depends what style of music you are into really. Heavy metal can go to drop C or B, if you are thinking along the same lines as drop D.

Somnium Dulcis.

I use Open E quite a bit (for fingerstyle blues), and Open G and Dropped D. When I got into Joni Mitchell stuff, she opened up a whole new world of alternate tunings! :D

Here are a few of the tunings I use..............
(Read these as beginning with Low E string and ending with High E.)

Std Standard tuning, EADGBE
Drop D DADGBE, "Dropped D"
Open C CGCGCE
Open D DADF#AD
Open G DGDGBD
Open E EBEG#BE (can be played as Open D, capo 2)
G minor GBbDGBbD

Hope that helps!
