Hi,

The way that I do it is, I lightly rest my wrist and the heal of my hand on the strings and allow my strumming to lift my hand off the strings and fall back to dampen the sound again. If feels like the heel of your hand is strumming (of course it is actually muting). I find it easier to control when strumming with my thumb.

I hope that makes sense,

Good luck.

Cheers,

Max

They way i do it is by putting the heel (the fleshy bit that runs between your wrist abd your pinky) of my left hand close to the bridge. It takes a while to get the right amount of pressure but stick to it and you will get it. Good luck

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.

Just to make you feel better, Palm muting is one of my weak points.
I can palm mute to cut a note or chord short but a percussive stroke? Forget it, not going to happen.
Something I definitely need to work on.

An interesting way to palm mute is to hit the strings just before you hit your palm on then, this is what missleman is talking about. If u get the timing right it will be more percusive but you can get the notes to ring in the body of the guitar a little bit, sounds really cool. An example of this would be Jack Johnson - Sitting, Waiting, Wishing.

However, this doesnt work to well on an electric, for that I just do what everyone else is saying. Lightly rest the fleshy part of your palm on the stings as close to the bridge as is comfortable to you. Sounds really good on a higly overdriven electric, that sound is like little angels to me :)

Good Luck!

a good way to learn and understand palm muting is to start by leaving that fleshy part of the plam on the bridge, damping all the strings.
strum up or down , it doesnt matter to start. the strings wont vobrate.
next with plalm muting strum and lift off abit. you'll hear a differnece.
next strum and lay your palm on the bridge. another sound differnece.
those are the three basica of palm muting.
play around and find what works.
