Basic theory question: Say you have a riff which contains a pedal tone note repeated several times throughout the riff...say on the open E or open A string. Must the pedal tone be the root of the scale that the riff is based upon, or can it be any note of that scale?

I'm not sure. I don't play mine on roots, but I am not that great at music theory. Sorry :(
