Hey in the song Scar Tissue by Red Hot Chilly Pepers there is a part in the intro that gos like this:

---------------
--------9------
----------------
----------------
--------8-----
---------------

The Eight and the nine are lined up straight :!: The note are played together, but the song sounds like its played with a pick. Is there a technique I'am missing here. How do you play both notes together while holding the pick :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:

You can pick one note with the pick, and the other with one of the fingers that isnt holding the pick. Thats probably how I'd go about it.

Tried that but it makes one note sound louder or diffrent than the other.
On the cd they sound the same.

If it doesn't sound rite hit it with a hammer....

Have you tried the the thumb and middle finger vs. the pick and middle?

Ok he probably used his fingers in some way, but I'am tring to find the way he did it while still holding the pick.

It's possible he's using a finger pick on the middle finger or using a set of finger picks. Try picking up a set of finger picks the next time you get to the store. Get the plastic ones for the guitar, the steel picks are for banjos.

The even volume thing with that technique should get better with practice. I'm learning a song that requires the same thing. I belive it's called hybrid-picking. I think it will be a useful skill to have in the toolbox. Also I have a little bit of fingernail, that helps too.

Another way is to do a barre with your index finger to hold the note on the A string and just dampen the D and G strings lightly with that finger. Then hit all four strings like a strum and only the notes on the A and B will ring out.

Yeah, John's a huge purveyor of muted strings. I'd almost be willing to bet that he's strumming everything and muting what he doesn't need.

Also, as akward as it may be, he could also be using his thumb, depending on where the notes are in a run, he frequently connects notes by keeping his "main" fingers in a position and then reaching around with the thumb to add a bass note.

Good luck on this and all Chili Peppers material, it will stress your fingers.

Do something you love and you'll never work a day in your life...
