What type of music? If it's a variety, something strat -ike with 2 single coils and a humbucker offers a lot of versatility. Yamaha, washburn and numerous others offer good beginner models. On the other hand, if you are into country, a telecaster may be better. Local guitar stores are usually good places to start. Unless you're in a really small town with little selection?

Well, I'll ask the default question: What style of music do you prefer? Often that can point you towards a certain type.

As for brands for beginners, Epiphone, Agile, Squier and the like are very good bang-for-buck guitars.

Welcome to Guitar Noise Dumpy.

I'm partial to Jackson's so with that in mind, a japanese model SLSMG would be a good choice. Another good choice would be a Schecter, neckthrough of course. If your serious about playing don't buy some cheap guitar, look the hardware and construction over really good. Oh, BTW, sight down the neck from the body side and make sure what ever you buy has a straight neck!!!

Good luck, have fun and ask any questions you need answered.

welcome Dumpy.
for ultimate versitility get a strat. with a flick of the swithc (5 settings) you can sound like a jazzer, a country picker, a pop star, o a rolling stone for example.

used strats are affordable. 300$ to 600$ will get you a good ax that you wont outgrow for years.

stay away from the starter packs. those guitrs play and feel horid.

definately check out the used department. there are many choices.

you're in Iowa. take a drive up to the twin cities and check out Willies Guitars or the big Guitar Center.

I also agree with a Stratocaster model of some kind, not only for versatility but also the fact that you can set it for very clean sound.
In the beginning you will be learning many open chords and with a guitar with dual humbuckers for heavy metal sound you will have a hard time playing those first things you will need to learn.

Dumpy, what is your price range, and what style of music do you want to play/like to listen to?

The more you tell us, the more we can tell you.

You're just lucky I was busy at work today!

However in this case I am not sure a heavy guitar such as the Agile 2000 Les Paul would be good? I think he could go a long time before wanting to get another one but wouldn't it be too heavy for a beginner?

When I set my evil name brand no name epi down and pick up my rg, I feel like I'm gonna bust the ceiling.

i like pretty much all styles of music, so it is hard for me to say which i would prefer to play, i like punk, hard rock, blues, country, i don't really have a price range, under $300 would be ideal but if i need to spend more i will, i dont want to buy a pos guitar that i am going to want to get rid of after a week. it sounds like a strat would be pretty much ideal for me. what about for an amp to get me started? thanks for all the info btw guys

in my opinion strats sound great through tube amps.

maybe a Blues Jr. would work to start.
the HotRod Devilles are nice too.
