I've been watching lots of videos lately that a friend showed me

Andy Mckee and Antoine Dufour both utilize this unique method of "drumming" their resonant cavities on their acoustics. It produces a really nice sound. I am curious what this is called so I can read more about it.

Here are some videos for reference:

there's a guy from St Helens - a few miles down the road from me - called Mark Wilson who plays like that. Grandson went to see him a couple of weeks ago, was hugely impressed. I've seen a few songs of his on youtube, and he's pretty good.

As to what you'd call it? Hmm, percussive open tuning guitar thumping?

Pretty cool, when you can pull something like that off - I just wonder, how would you get on jamming with one of these guys, if you asked 'em to play G, Em, C and D?

:D :D :D

I have a friend who's terrific at playing that way. He's awesome to see in concert. I've tried jamming with him and found it very frustrating. (I'm sure he did, too!) As for Vic's point, he couldn't tell you what chord he's playing most of the time, he's just doing stuff that sounds good, and a lot of it's based on using standard tuning chord shapes and sliding them up and down the fretboard till they sound good. He did show me some nice licks that I use. He also has a book out that's aimed at introducing intermediate guitarists to playing this kind of stuff. Check out his site: http://freestyleguitar.com/

Andy plays in open tunings.

Tune your guitar to Open G and you are ready for that magic.
