I realize their are different opinions on this, but is it technically bad technique to anchor? The most common type I do is just resting my palm on the strings while I'm playing to keep them quite and help with muting. I can play fairly well anchoring or not, but should I completely give up anchoring? Difficult passages become even tidious when I can't mute with my picking hand, so what should I be doing?

The meaning of life? I've never heard a simpler question! Music.

No, you don't have to give it up altogether, but some things arwill be harder to do that way.

Some people anchor some people don't. As long as your anchoring isn't creating extra tension in your hand go for it.

Malmsteen, Eric Johnson, Petrucci all anchor...
Paul Gilbert completely floats...

they all shred :)

I've been imitated so well I've heard people copy my mistakes.

There are going to be times when you want the note to ring out, so I would suggest some of your practice time should include non-pam muted work.
