If you want to convert YouTube videos to permament videos that you store on your hard drive here is the procedure:
(I'm posting this because of correspondence with another person I met here who uses the YouTube video lessons on guitars and thought there might be others out there who might be doing the same)

The steps are:
1. Find the YouTube video in the temporary Internet files folder.
2. Change the file name with an ending of .FLV
3. Use the Freeze File Converter program to change it to an .AVI, MPEG or WMV file.

Details on each step:
1. In your Internet Explorer browser program:
a. Click on Tools then Internet Options
b. In the General tab, Temporary Internet files section click on Settings
c. Click on View Files and you'll see a list of all the temp Internet files.
The hard part is finding the file in the hundreds of files that are most likely to be there.
Here are some tips on finding the file:
Look at the Internet address for the YouTube video because part of the Internet address will be in the file name.
For example,
The video that I recently sent of guitarist playing "House of the Rising Sun" had the address of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgzqKPBwJ6A and the file name was get_video?video_id=SgzqKPBwJ6A
I also arranged the files by size because video files are huge. That way I looked at the bottom of the file list and found the video file real quickly.

By the way, it might be easier to find the file if you delete your temporary Internet files before you download the YouTube video.

2. OK, once you find the file, copy and paste the file in some other folder (or to the desktop). And rename the file and put the ending .FLV (example Rising_Sun.flv)

3. Now to convert the FLV file to a video file (in either AVI, MPEG, or WMV format) you'll need to download the converter program.
Here's the link to the site : http://www.mediaconverter.org/index.php?s=saconverter
The file to download is at the bottom right of the web page.
The program is pretty self explanatory. Add the file you want converted to the list (by browsing your hard drive for the file that you renamed with the flv ending). Click on Filetype to choose what format you want (AVI, MPEG, WMV) and you can change the destination folder to wherever you want the new file to be created.
Once the file is created, just double click it and your Windows media player will play it.

Let me know if you have questions.

It's the rock that gives the stream its music . . . and the stream that gives the rock its roll.

It's gotten a little simpler recently.
Paste the youtube URL in the appropriate box here:
http://vixy.net
and choose the conversion format you'd like. You have the option of common media formats like 'avi' and 'mpeg'. The site converts and then D/Ls the file to your machine (at least on a Mac).
The server can be a little flaky (down then up) but it's worked great for me.

Thanks for the explanation which I' try next time I see a video I want to save. Another option is to use KeepVid

http://keepvid.com/

Like another response you copy and paste the URL you want to save in the appropriate box and hit download. When the dialog box pops up to save it, you give it a name with the flv extension
