I've found this an easy one to play and sing along with (with my limited vocal range, my wife says this should be my signature song). The kids think it's hilarious.

You want to play with a swing feel. I count out one-two-and-three-and-four-and-one-two-and-three-and-four, changing chords (and hitting just the bass note) on the first beat of each measure.
As I am as rhythmically challenged as I am vocally challenged, this counting may be wrong, but it works for me. Have fun

G D
Crossing the highway late last night
C G
He shoulda looked left and he shoulda looked right
G D
He didn't see the station wagon car
C G
The skunk got squashed and, there you are

You got your
G D
Dead skunk in the middle of the road
C G
Dead skunk in the middle of the road
G D
Dead skunk in the middle of the road
C G
Stinking to high heaven

G D
Take a tip from me, that ain't no rose
C G
Roll up the window and hold your nose
G D
You don't have to look and you don't have to see
C G
You can feel it in your olfactory

You got your

Dead skunk in the middle of the road
C G
Dead skunk in the middle of the road
G D
Dead skunk in the middle of the road
C G
Stinking to high heaven

G D
Well you got your dead cat and you got your dead dog
C G
On a moonlit night you got your dead toad frog
G D
You got your dead rabbit and your dead raccoon
C G
Aw, the blood and the guts are gonna make you swoon

G
You got your
G D
Dead skunk in the middle of the road
C G
Dead skunk in the middle of the road
G D
Dead skunk in the middle of the road
C G
Stinking to high heaven

(All OVER the road!)

Thanks for the tab, Slydog.

That's my favorite Loudon Wainwright III song. OK, I'll confess; it's the ONLY LW3 song I know...

It *is* a fun little ditty.

You should look for Bicentenial from the album T Shirt I saw him do it on an old SNL repeat.
